Young Jane Austen is tired of waiting for her conservative parents to decree she is old enough to attend the local assemblies. Jane longs to join her older sister in laughing, dancing, and embarking on flirtations with interesting young men. Unfortunately for fifteen-year-old Jane, she has two more years to wait for such fun.

Then an invitation arrives from Jane’s eldest brother Edward. The Austens are invited to Kent in order to celebrate Edward’s engagement to a young lady of consequence. Not only is Jane to be included in the party, she is invited to a series of parties and a ball.

Jane immediately feels a thrill of excitement in meeting the devilishly handsome Edward Taylor. While breathlessly navigating her first attachment, she finds herself unable to resist the urge to encourage the budding relationships of three lovely couples attending the house party. Unfortunately for Jane, matchmaking is not as easy as it might seem.

Syrie James does a wonderful job of preserving the warm humor and classic matchmaking foibles that have entertained Austenites from the beginning. Readers of all ages will enjoy Jane and Edward’s antics and faulty first impressions. It is truly an enjoyable story for those looking for that familiar storytelling style.
