Mitch Burns is a police detective. His father, also a policeman, was killed in the line of duty. This influenced Mitch’s career decision. However, he feels unfulfilled in his job. Ocean Point, New Jersey is a busy summer resort. But lately, the town has been very quiet. Mitch does not realize that this is about to change. He is very close to his Aunt Betty, who took him in after his mother’s death. His aunt hopes that Mitch will find a nice young lady and settle down. Mitch receives a phone call that will change his life.
Elise Jenkins is a reporter. She grew up in a small town in the Midwest. Her parents do not understand her passion for writing. She is fresh out of college and ready to start a new job on the east coast. Her editor tells her that Ocean Point is a quiet community and that she will be covering stories about the summer tourists. He says nothing very dramatic ever happens in their town. Elise has no idea that her first story will cover a murder in this quiet beach town.
When Mitch goes to the scene of a suspicious death, he meets Elise, who was sent to cover the story. Mitch feels immediate attraction to Elise. However, he knows with the tourist season about to start, he will be under enormous pressure to solve this murder; there will not be time for a personal life. He is mystified by the fact that the murder victim’s index finger is pointed forward. After another murder victim is found with her finger distended, Mitch knows there must be a connection. Among the many suspects are a fortune-teller and a building developer who wants to build condos where fortune-tellers are located on the pier. As Mitch and Elise spend more time together, their attraction cannot be denied. Mitch vows to get to know Elise better after the murders are solved. When Elise decides to dig deeper into the investigation of the fortune-teller, she puts herself in grave danger. Will Mitch discover the villain in time to save Elise? How many more people will die before the case is solved?
Ms Bradford has written a terrific debut novel that will have you turning the pages quickly to solve the mystery. The suspense builds until the final pages. When you discover who the murderer is, you will be shocked. And the reason behind the crimes is even more shocking! The excitement in this book will keep you reading until the wee hours. This book has everything: action, adventure, mystery and romance. After reading “Jury of One”, I cannot wait to read Ms Bradford’s next book.
