Deborah McMillan, a trained teacher, agrees to take a job as a governess for the three wards of Sir Martin Hadley. She knows he must be desperate to offer such a large sum of money, but she also knows children need love and acceptance, especially after the loss of their parents. She needs the money to save her school, and leaving town would give her heart a chance to mend.
Martin Hadley, baronet, never expected his friend to die, or to gain the responsibility of three small children. After returning to England upon his brother’s death, the children soon arrived, one by one. He agreed to take responsibility for them, but he never agreed to love them. He wants nothing to do with love, and built a wall around his heart a long time ago.
From the moment Deborah arrives under his employ, things start changing in the Hadley residence. He learns she truly likes children and acts on behalf of their best interests. She manages to get him to spend time with the children and tries to weaken his resolve to send them to school. Slowly, Deborah starts to crack the wall around his heart, but he does not know anything about being part of a loving family, and does not want to learn.
Lessons In Love is a wonderful story with a title that is a perfect fit. The characters’ emotions were well-written and believable. I laughed, cried, cursed and cheered as I read not only about the hero and heroine, but also the supporting characters, each one adding something special. The story is more than we hope for, and I appreciated issues being resolved in just the right amount of time—not lingering for half the book. Though it is part of a series, this book stands alone, and I hope to read more about Ms. Hall’s Victorian Ladies.
