Stella Monroe is having problems - a lot of problems. Her name means star and she is in New York to become one. It just is not happening for her. Instead, she has awakened one morning to the fourth stranger in as many weeks after chocolate martini nights to soothe her rattled soul. Without work, without prospects, she decides to turn all that around just as soon as she can get rid of the guy in her bed without her upstairs neighbor seeing the whole thing.
The supporting cast of characters in the story is long, but one stands out the most, driving Stella the craziest. Her upstairs neighbor Christian, a grad student with incredibly structured and most annoying habits is constantly appearing in her life at the most inopportune times. She makes sure he remembers to eat, and he in turn does plenty of things to make her even more frustrated at him.
Armed with a Persian cat named Miss Bubbles who ends up getting a better acting job than her by virtue of the fact the cat can whistle and act on cue, Stella faces her life head on, determined to make it work. Bad casting calls, a small group of supportive friends, a hunky leading man her cat does not exactly like and a long distance stage mom do not make it easy on Stella. She wants success, money, and the leading man, in that order, but it does not quite turn out that way.
With chocolate martinis flowing freely, and her habit of cooking when she is feeling down and out, the author gives Stella a wonderfully near manic life that works itself out in its own way whether Stella likes it or not. Full of stand out supporting characters, a jaded but funny and anxious leading lady, this story is snappy and sweet, and a cheeky insight into the world of those struggling to make it in the world of acting.
