Melodie Alexander is ready for a change. After the tragic death of her best friend, Tom, who was killed in action fighting for his country, she heads off to Dallas, Texas for a much-needed vacation. When she meets a hunky, arrogant, cowboy type on the plane ride there, she decided to go for it and introduce herself, even though this man is clearly not her type.

Melodie Alexander is definitely not Daniel Bresland’s type either. Pretty, demure and intriguing, she is not the buxom bombshell he usually goes for in his love'em-then-leave'em romantic trysts. But something about her attracts Daniel from the start, and he pursues an acquaintanceship with her, despite putting her off on more than one occasion with his arrogance.

Both Daniel and Melodie have a minefield to navigate with each other, for they each carry deep wounds. What Daniel learns of Melodie is that, having lived under the shadow of her older, perfect sister, marrying Tom at the age of thirty if they were not already married was her safety net. With his death, her confidence and her outlook on life is entirely shaken. And Melodie learns that despite Daniel’s abundance of confidence, he too is a casualty of war, and blames himself for a failed mission which led to the deaths of the men he was leading. But together, they may just find a way to help each other heal - if their budding romantic relationship can last more than one night.

This was a cute story. I liked main characters Daniel and Melody from the start. Their emotional scars added a deeper, more meaningful twist to the classic boy-meets-girl love story. I also liked the inclusion of Annie, Daniel’s daughter, and of Daniel’s problems with his ex wife. With an interesting turn to the resolution of Melodie’s problems with her mother and sister added into the mix, this was a fun, satisfying contemporary romance.
