Adrian De la Noye is a well-known and successful attorney who adores his wife and loves his children. He has a strong sense of justice and a mysterious past.

James Reid is newly graduated from Harvard Law thanks to Adrian, who has been his mentor for most of his life. He is smart and has a bright future in spite of his origins.

Adrian and James travel to Newport to rewrite an important client’s will. Bennett Chapman is getting married, and his adult children disapprove of Catherine Walsh. Miss Walsh’s niece is a medium and has been giving Mr. Chapman instructions from his late wife. Miss Walsh is a woman from Adrian’s past.

The author has set her story in Newport of the twenties, just past its prime as a playground for the rich and famous, and flashes back to the resort at its peak. Adrian’s past and present intertwine throughout the story as a fascinating subplot to the main plot line. The characters are well-drawn and realistic, and the author has a good grasp of the Spiritualism movement and the City of Newport in that period. This novel is full of interesting plot twists making it impossible to put down.
