Stefan Marius is a vampire who is just coming to terms with the fact that he is indeed gay. Through a misunderstanding in his past, he had thought such feelings were forbidden and as such hid the truth from himself and everyone around him.
Patrick Hawk has been the sexual plaything for a deviant gay sex club owner and the man’s patrons since he was seventeen. He hates what he has to do, and the men forcing him to do it, but feels there is no way out of his situation.
When Stefan decides to check out the gay club scene in New York, he has no idea that he is going to find his mate in one of the most sordid situations a person can possibly imagine. When it becomes apparent that his mate is being forced to do sex acts with others against his will, it is the final straw and he rescues him taking him away from the situation. Not that he wouldn’t have done so anyway, but the fact that Patrick was being held against his will makes it even more of an imperative for Stefan. However, Patrick has some serious emotional issues because he has been sexually, mentally, physically, and emotionally abused for years all because the man holding him convinced him that Patrick owed him money. Stefan knows he has to tread carefully, but just as the two begin to become close and Patrick beings regaining some of his autonomy and self-confidence, the man who held him makes it very clear he will do just about anything to get Patrick back. Mix this up with the fact that there is more to Patrick than meets the eye when it comes to his genetic heritage, and you have a real mess that needs to be sorted out. Will Stefan be able to protect Patrick? Will Patrick be able to handle the news that he is more than he thinks?
I have had the pleasure of reading the first two books in this series even though I did not have the pleasure of reviewing them, and I have to say I have absolutely loved all three books so far and cannot wait for the next one to come out! Ms. Flynn has done some really fantastic world building in all these books, including this one, that is both interesting and very creative. I loved the fact that Stefan did not judge Patrick for what had happened to him, and did not allow his jealousy over other men having touched his mate make him do something stupid like blame Patrick. While this may not seem realistic to some readers, I felt as if this made perfect sense for Stefan given who he is and the family he comes from. I also thought that Ms. Flynn did an excellent job of showing how the abuse had affected Patrick and had clearly done her research when it comes to victims of abuse. The sex is hot and varied, but also very, very loving and emotional which is probably one of my favorite if not my favorite parts of this book. If you have not read the books in this series then I strongly urge you to go out and pick up a copy of the first three, they are the kind of books that you will read over and over!
