When Ophelia Nichols landed her dream job with the Environmental Protection Agency and was sent to monitor an Alaskan oil rig for her first assignment, she may have been somewhat idealistic about her prospects. The reality, she quickly learns, is that life in the Alaskan wilderness, in an industry which is most definitely a “man’s world,” can be lonely and even dangerous since she is the only woman on the rig and is considered an enemy of “big oil.” Thankfully the men do not hate her indiscriminately, and she is able to make a few friends in her short stay.

Her friendship with Leonardo McKenna; however, is one that affects her far more than the rest. He is unlike any man she has ever met. He is rugged and handsome, but also inexplicably academic, just like Ophelia herself. In the finite, enclosed space within the oil rig, she finds that Leonardo occupies more and more room in her thoughts. When her time at the rig is done, and she must return home, she cannot seem to forget him.

Despite the distance, Ophelia and Leonardo’s friendship steadily grows into something more. In an unexpected twist, Ophelia finds herself being fired unjustly from the EPA and hired by the very oil company which she was originally sent to monitor. It is the very thing which Ophelia and Leonardo need to turn their long-distance desire into their happily-ever-after.

The two things I demand in a good romance are likable characters and a slow burn. This book has both. Sway with Me is a textbook exercise in how a falling-in-love story does not need to be intensely sexual. Even though the main characters, Ophelia and Leonardo, spend a significant portion of the book away from each other, there was enough sweet, wholesome chemistry between them to keep me turning the pages. I also appreciate that the setting was unconventional, and that there was enough detail about life on an oil rig in Alaska to make the book feel authentic.
