Dr. Halona Moore is all set to begin her new job in pediatrics at Harper Hills Hospital in California as she goes to stay with her sister, Fran. When she and her four-year-old daughter Laura arrive and find Fran’s body in the bathroom, she is shocked. Who would want to kill Fran? After she is introduced to Mak and he shows an interest in Laura, Halona wonders if he can be trusted.
Captain Harris Macklin becomes involved with Halona after Fran’s death. He is drawn to Halona and Laura, and when Halona receives strange phone calls, he believes she could be the next victim.
After a divorce, Halona and Laura set out to move in with her sister, only to find disaster the day they arrive. Whoever killed Fran left a pyramid of burnt matches in the room. It reminded her of the huge pyramid-shaped building she noticed when she arrived in town. Halona is heartbroken. Fran was there for her during the divorce and accepted Laura, who had been diagnosed as autistic. When Mak arrives and begins his investigation, Halona learns there have been eleven other unsolved killings. She notices how loving Mak is with Laura, nothing like her ex-husband. As she and Mak begin searching for answers, someone watches Halona. When she rummages through baby records, she finds Laura caught right in the middle, and time running out. She prays that Mak can find answers fast.
Temple of Serpents is a spine-tingling read. The believable characters spin a story that keeps the reader on the edge of their seats. I was so deeply touched with Mak’s concern over Laura. His sensitivity and understanding shines in this remarkable read. Ms. Toombs pens an incredible read. Engaging, magnetic, suspenseful, and entertaining, this is one book that thrills and touches the heart.
