When Nate Garner signed up to audition for The Knife’s Edge, a prime-time reality cooking competition, he did not expect to make it past the first round of cuts. Now after several rounds, he is up against some stiff competition for the final casting. When his sister decides he needs a more professional audition video, she puts Nate in touch with an acquaintance, June Sinclair.

Little does Nate know that June holds a grudge against him. Years ago, she watched as rival high school football star Nate broke her brother Simon’s arm in a game. That event stuck in her mind as the point at which Simon’s downward spiral in life began. But June is not one to say no when she makes a commitment, so she goes forward with the project despite her dislike of Nate. It would be so much easier if he were not so good-looking.

In working closely together, June realizes she may have been hasty to judge. It turns out Nate is a talented cook and a nice guy deep down. What’s more, she comes to understand Nate is not at fault for Simon’s continually worsening behavior. June will have to find a way to let go of old resentments and to tell Nate how she feels about him before he is cast for The Knife’s Edge and leaves for California.

I picked up this book because I read book two in this series already, and I liked the author’s style. The Secret Ingredient delivered exactly what I was looking for: a fun, easy romance with likeable characters and just enough conflict to keep me reading. I was a little disappointed there was no real resolution on Nate’s overzealous best female friend who wants him for herself, nor on June’s disruptive brother (especially since the book suggests Simon may suffer from clinical depression). Overall, though, this book deserves a solid four cups and a recommend.
