THE SILENT TOUCH OF SHADOWS
Rating: 5 Cups
Genealogist Melissa Grantham is divorcing her unfaithful husband and taking her 12-year-old daughter to visit with her great aunt in her family’s ancestral home. From the moment Melissa arrives, lifelike dreams and visions haunt her. She senses a spiritual connection to a medieval young woman and her forbidden lover. Despite her fear that she might lose her sanity as others before her have, she is determined to solve the mystery.
Jake Precy, veterinarian and neighbor of her aunt’s, has disturbing dreams, too. But it is not until he meets Melissa that they begin to make sense. He hires her to research his family’s history, unaware their lives are already entwined from 600 years earlier.
Working together on the research with Jake, who is a dead ringer for Sir Roger, makes her dreams all the more vivid, and even the dog, Russ, sees the ghost. Melissa gradually uncovers some of the reasons for the haunting and feels the desperation that the male ghost is imploring her to find so he can be free of this earth. Although she discovers his female lover’s gravesite, the history of Sir Roger eludes her. Eventually a gold dragon ring guides her journey. But is the rune script inside a curse or a wish? Will her growing love for Jake be destroyed by the ghost that invades her dreams?
This suspenseful, parallel, historical, time travel, paranormal is one huge page turner. It is not difficult to believe every scene and follow Melissa's frightening journey into the cruel past. This reader was thoroughly swept away by the good description, believable emotion, and language appropriate for the timeframe of each scene. Ms. Courtenay is a skilled storyteller.
