When Beth Dawson left her nursing career in the big city of Auckland and opted for Ocean View Hospital and its small town atmosphere, she thought she was getting away from violence and danger. She was wrong. She arrives at her new job to find a car wedged in the doorway of the emergency room and tough-looking leather clad individuals filling the lobby. Evidently, Ocean View has its own gang issues, but finding that a familiar problem exists in her new hometown isn’t nearly as distressing as running into the handsome doctor to whom she was engaged years before.
Dr. Luke Savage has aged, but the gray that colors his temples only lends to his appeal. His aspirations of climbing the medical ladder of success have fallen by the wayside since he discovered there are more important things in life than money and position. It took a painful lesson, but it was one well learned and it changed him from the person that Beth knew long ago. Seeing her brings back old feelings and new regrets.
Beth came to Ocean View expecting to find a quieter and more refined way of life, but instead she found an opportunity to reunite with an old love… but does she want to? Her engagement to another doctor has just ended and she is not anxious to open her heart again. Still, just the sight of Luke rekindles old feelings. The two ex-lovers are thrown together when several whales beach themselves and they must work together to save the creatures from death. Most of the whales are saved, but Beth collapses and is rushed to the hospital where she nearly dies. In her post-surgery haze, she sees Luke’s face, but when she opens her eyes, it is Brent, her ex-fiancé, who is there to take her home and care for her.
The Surgeon’s Engagement Wish by Alison Roberts is a well-written, engaging story that keeps your attention until the very end. Ms. Roberts certainly demonstrates a talent for conflict in her writing as you experience Beth’s struggle with her feelings for Luke and he for her. So often at the end of a book, I’m left wondering why I bothered finishing it, but in this case, the story is a quick read and one that made me feel that the time spent was worthwhile.
