Cesaria “Chess” Putnam is a woman with many talents. She is a witch, a Debunker, and a ghost hunter who banishes spirits so that citizens can go on with their happy lives without worrying about being haunted.
Terrible is an enforcer for Bump, a vicious drug lord who uses force, drugs, and addictions to get people to dance to his tune. When Chess’ monetary balance reaches a staggering amount, Terrible is sent to retrieve her for a special job.
It all starts innocently enough for Chess, just do a small job for Bump and her balance will become null and void. Instead, she finds herself embroiled in much more, including an attraction to two rival gang members as well as being double-crossed by someone close. Trying to stay alive while she juggles the different powerful people in her life is bad enough. But now, she has a very wicked entity after her, one who is willing to go to the extreme to retrieve an artifact she has unknowingly taken from him and somehow linked him to her, turning her nightmares into reality.
Unholy Ghosts was confusing in the beginning for me, leaving me with the feeling that there is a previous story to read to fully understand what is going on in this book. However, about midway through the book Stacia Kane began to catch my attention as I read about Chess’ struggle with the undead, men, drugs, and a world full of secrets waiting to be revealed. Throw in a scarred, less than handsome enforcer whose charm just happens to get past all your defenses along with a gang leader who seduces you even as he compels you to do his bidding, and you will find yourself wondering what she will do next. The action, suspense, sexual tension, and chills make this an intense book. Once you get into this novel, you will not want to put it down, and I am looking forward to more Chess Putnam adventures in the future.
