River Maples is a widow living in a remote area of the North. She is mistrustful of men and very protective of the wild creatures living on her land.
Benton Chaser is a Castoridae or Beaver Shifter. He has chosen to live apart from his clan, and in his animal form, he has made friends with the beautiful woman who lives near his pond.
Castoridae mate for life, and Benton has all but given up and finding his One until he meets River. River is a widow and has chosen to live apart from all men, although the local trappers harass her. One in particular threatens both River and the animals she loves and protects.
This is an interesting and creative take on the shape-shifter genre. I have never heard of a beaver shifter, and there is something appealing and cuddly about it. It just does not have the protective vibe that a predator shifter has though. William, the trapper, is an unsavory character, but he should not be such a threat. Both of the main characters are appealing, but could have been fleshed out a bit more. The Riva character appeared out of nowhere and her plotline was unresolved. A minor point, but her name and River’s are just a bit too close in spelling making for a bit of confusion. Overall, this is an enjoyable tale with inventive characters, a fast moving plot, and well written love scenes.
