Almost Adept

Author(s): Olga Godim

To prove her Adept potential, seventeen-year-old mage Eriale embarks on her first magical quest. She expects a glittering foreign escapade but ends up in Grumesh, the land rife with poverty and violence, where local courier Kealan becomes her only friend and ally. Together, they survive an explosion, a treacherous incarceration, and a daring escape. Sparks of interest ignite between them, but before Eriale can explore her attraction to Kealan, she discovers blood magic running amok in the city. Her priorities must change. As an aspiring Adept, she is duty-bound to find and eliminate the blood mage of Grumesh, or the blood magic will taint the entire land. No matter the cost—her life or her heart—she can’t let the vile mage win.

Excerpt

She was one lane away from the toy shop, already sensing the tiny, luminous good-will spells of the toymaker, when abruptly, unfamiliar magic flared, muddy and unclean. Blood magic. It wrenched the hatch spell askew, twisted the beautiful toymaker’s charms into obscene, hatred-soaked deformities, and exploded into fire. A loud bang detonated, followed by the hideous tongues of brown flames, bursting up from the location of the toy shop. A moment later, the flames assumed their normal, orange-red color, and bloody fragments of toys and children started raining down.

The force of the explosion flung Eriale to the ground. People ran all around her, their faces distorted, mouths open, but she couldn’t hear a thing. The fair seemed to become mute in terror. The fire shot up hungrily, devouring the neighboring stalls like a fierce beast.

Frozen in shock, Eriale stared at a small, bloody hand a few paces away. Its stiffened fingers still clutched the fluffy head of a toy bear. Sharp bone protruded from the ragged stump. The hatch spell flicked out of existence. Her father was going to get a hell of a headache when the demolished spell backfired at him, she thought dizzily. The alien blood magic lingered on her tongue, making her nauseous. She tried to keep her food down but failed. She threw up.
