From Ride Like a Stallion by Kiernan Kelly
Humans built cities by using the strength of equine backs; it would've been impossible to feed those same cities, defend them, and conquer them without the same.
Indeed, humans have marched down the evolutionary track hand-in-hoof with horses, aided and inspired by their equine brethren. The fact remains that the entirety of human civilization owes a huge debt to its equine friends. Think about it. What good would the invention of the wheel do the world without a horse to pull a wagon? How would a ruler conquer a neighboring kingdom without an army of knights charging in on their fabled steeds? Would pioneers have dared trek into the wilderness to carve out new civilizations if they had to walk the whole way?
Knowing this, perhaps someone could explain why I, as a member of such a proud and noble species, am walking in circles, wearing a sequined sombrero and oversized sunglasses, carrying drooling, snot-nosed, soggy-bottomed ankle-biters on my back at a kid's birthday party. Around and around, around and around. Stop, drop off one kid, and pick up another. Around and around, around and around.
It's demeaning.
I wasn't bred for such a life. No siree, bob. I was born on a ranch where horses were valued. My dam was Fire Dancer, a beautiful chestnut Morgan with a hundred county fair blue ribbons to her name. Well, maybe not a hundred exactly -- to be honest, the whole concept of numbers is a little fuzzy for me -- but she'd won a lot of them anyway. Her humans would travel around the country with her, showing her at competitions and county fairs, and more likely than not, she'd win.
My sire's pedigree, if a bit less illustrious, was no less impressive. He was a draft horse, you see, a big Percheron, born and bred on an Amish farm in some place called Pencil Vania. I heard the humans say he could pull a heavier load than any other horse in the county, and he won his share of ribbons doing just that in competitions. Well, anyway, one day, one of the hands was leading my dad out to the plow, when the hand got sick. Just clutched his chest and fell down face-first in the dirt.  There was a lot of yelling, and humans came running from all directions. In the confusion, my dad found his way into my mother's corral and, well, one thing led to another.
And here I am.
