Bryan Mathers unlocked the door to the condo and stepped across the threshold, removing the straps of two large worn duffle bags from across his shoulders and dropping them at his booted feet. The noise they made hitting the wood floor echoing throughout the place before bouncing back to his ears. He paused for a moment in the short foyer area as the instincts he’d honed over the last few years from his tour in Afghanistan, and before that Bagdad, had him scanning the room for questionable shadows or movement. But of course nothing moved in the semi-darkened room in Ballston, Virginia. He was alone—for now.
