Author(s): Patricia Bates

Rylee Parys, like her father and grandfather is a small time rancher with a big time problem. Embroiled in a bitter war over water and land, she stands alone against her neighbors who are dismayed to have a woman in control.

Ex-cavalry officer, Tom Duncan has returned home after the bloody civil war only to find himself in the middle of another war. Pitted against a slim, boyish looking woman, he’s uncertain who to believe. When the hostility boils over and becomes physical, Tom must make a stand.

As the clues add up these two bitter opponents must rely on each other to save not only their way of life – but the love that has grown between them.

Tom's eyes darkened to a rich smoky grey. Desire flashed like lightning through them as he studied her. “I’m not the enemy, Rylee,” he murmured softly.

“No, of course not,” she retorted, twisting in his grasp. “You’re my dearest friend all set to rush in and save me. Only who is gonna save me from you? Let go now. I’ve work to do.” Her tone was curt, harsh even to her ears and she prayed that he would let go so she could collapse in private. Every ounce of her soul cried out to him, need and desire thick within her blood, and she longed to just throw caution to the wind and beg him to take her. Pride stopped her, pride and the knowledge that once she’d had him, she’d never be free of him or the need that burned through her.

Tom uttered a low, angry curse before he pulled her flush against him. Hard and unyielding, his body pressed against her soft curves, the rise and fall of his chest in time with her own. He reached up and trailed his fingers through her short cropped hair, knocking her hat from her head in the process.

Calloused and work hardened, his fingertips drifted down her cheek, tracing the curve of her nose, her lips. His eyes never left hers as his grip loosened before he wrapped his arm around her waist and held her tightly. Rylee could feel the thick ridge beneath the worn Levi’s press against her belly, felt the muscles in his legs bunch as he shifted. Her hands went up to rest on his shoulders as he bent his knees and lifted her.

A tiny gasp of shock escaped her as he swung her around and pinned her to the wall. “I’m not the enemy,” he whispered and bent his head to kiss her. Slow, steady, the touch of his lips was heady, like a drug. With each passing second, each throb of her heart, her control slipped.

“Yes, you are,” she replied against his lips, “maybe you weren’t once, a long time ago, but now you are. This is a bad idea Tom.” She tilted her head back at the touch of his lips on her throat. Stars danced behind her lids as she gasped for air. This was what she’d heard about, what boys whispered about in the back corners of school rooms and she wanted it all. She wanted the man pressing against her with a desperation that haunted her even after all the history they shared. Arousal slammed into her like a wave crashing over a beachhead, and for the first time in her life, Rylee surrendered to it and let the emotions carry her away.
