The man who would beat the devil isn’t a hero, but a ruthless madman.
Running from his dark past, former Duvalier hit man Charles Redmond is forced to take sides in a battle that has been raging since Exodus, between a power mad magician named Silas Alverado and Sammael, the Demon Prince of Liars. When Charles’ beloved Voodoo is threatened with extinction, he must wager his life between pure evil and the man who could destroy the world. Charles’ psychiatrist Sanantha Mauwad steps into this maelstrom of nightmares, violence and insanity to help Charles find his strength. She tries to save Charles’ mind but can she save his soul?
"Great Madame Erzulie, hear my plea. I have been taken prisoner by our enemy. ... It is worse than we feared. He plans to destroy Voodoo and replace it with the dead religion of the ancient Egyptians. Great Mistress of the Rainbow, I need your guidance, for I do not know how to stop this madman."
While he spoke, he brushed the bare wires together on one end of the twisted paper. A blue-white spark sputtered between the ends, but did not ignite the paper.
"Please let this message reach your merciful ears." He tried again, and this time the paper caught flame. He picked up the paper and held it flame down so it would catch and spread up. When it had, he blew the fire out and gently puffed on the ember to keep it glowing. He smiled as a stream of white smoke wafted up.
It first it smelled sweetly of toasted marshmallow, but then the hair caught, and the smoke turned putrid. He fought the urge to hold his breath or turn away. "Here is my message, Grand Maitresse. Please come to save your faithful. All will be lost if this man succeeds."
