A Cajun Thanksgiving

Cajun Heat: Book 1

Author(s): K.T. Bishop

Bucky Rich and Jeri Lyn Hartz are two people trying to find their way in society. Cut from the New Orleans Saints' roster just as he stood ready to claim his pension, Bucky, the handsome African-American quarterback found himself without a job. And nothing seems to be going right for Jeri Lyn. Then the two hard-luck cases meet at a political fundraiser in Hammond, Louisiana. Will the two kindred souls find love in each other?

Seconds after Jeri Lyn and April reached the HCC door, disaster unexpectedly struck. The door swung wide open and someone stumbled into Jeri Lyn, as a swift push sent her tumbling to the ground.

Grumble spewed from Jeri Lyn's lips. “Of all the clumsiest things to happen,” until the strange man's appearance rendered her speechless.

“I'm so sorry, I should watch where I'm going,” the man said in a low, deep baritone voice. He helped Jeri Lyn to her feet, brushing off the dust with his right hand. “I don't blame you for being angry at me. I'm mad at myself too.”

Her face curled into a wide smile and words struggled out of her mouth. “Uh, that's okay, it was my fault.” She backed away and continued to stare inside his deep black eyes. She felt muscles beneath his blue shirt. For the first time in a while, excitement danced inside her stomach.

Guilt consumed his soul over the incident, offering his services. “The least I can do is get you a drink.”

“Uh-okay, that sounds nice,” Jeri Lyn said under a chuckle. She winked at April and went inside the arena with the man.

Jeri Lyn's breath hitched as they walked inside and reached the Cash bar in the right corner.

He introduced himself before ordering a drink. “My name's Samuel Rich, but people call me Bucky.”

She cleared the lump in her throat, shaking his hand. “I'm Jeri Lyn Hartz. It's nice to meet you.”

“It's nice to meet you too,” he said. Bucky snapped his right finger to get the bartender's attention. “Get this beautiful woman a drink.” He turned to Jeri Lyn. “What do you want?”

“I'll take a gin and some sprite,” Jeri Lyn said. Her eyes sparkled as she continues to stare at Bucky. She received her drink and sipping it from a straw, while Bucky ordered Jack Daniels and Coke.

He took a quick glance at Jeri Lyn and felt some attraction. “Would you like to sit with me a little while?”

Jeri Lyn didn't hesitate, nodding her head and following him to the back row. “I don't think you'll want to be bored to hear about little ole' me.

“You'll probably think the same thing about me,” Bucky said.

Cates' speech to officially announce his candidacy for Lt. Governor went unnoticed for Bucky and Jeri Lyn, who were suddenly glued to each other.

“I didn't want to come here,” Jeri Lyn said. “A friend forced me to come.”

“Neither did I,” Bucky admitted. “My best pal forced me.”

Bucky opened up about his present status. “Until last week, I was a quarterback for the Saints.”

“Oh really, you played for the Saints,” Jeri Lyn said. Her tone suggested she didn't believe him.

He wasn't offended at her doubting his claim to be on the Saints' squad. “Actually, I was on the team, but didn't play.”

“You pro athletes make all the big bucks,” Jeri Lyn said. Hunger gnawed deep within Jeri Lyn, who was fascinated by his story.

“Nice work if you can get it, but I can't anymore,” Bucky said.

His warm breath grazed her left shoulder and she loved every minute of it. The tightness in her body began to loosen because of his presence. She was comfortable being around him.
