Eagle Dancer

Author(s): Theresa Scott

Though he was a fierce enemy of her people, Hope was drawn to the blue-eyed prisoner.  Her heart would not let her escape the sure knowledge that he, and only he, was the man for her.

When Paul Baron left the Civil War battlegrounds, he was a broken man. Little did he care what happened to him at the hands of the most formidable of foes: the Sioux. But an old woman and a beautiful Lakota girl gave him something he never expected nor wanted: the chance to live—and love, again...

“Look, lady, get this through your head. I am not staying here and playing Indian with you. I have a post at the fort—I’m second in command. That’s where I’m needed.”

“No,” she said, and she smiled again. Her teeth were white and straight.

Damn. He was beginning to like her smile, he decided. “You are missing something in your translation here,” he said slowly and distinctly. “Evidently you do not understand.”

She looked offended. He smiled to himself. He’d offend her some more if that’s what it took to get the hell out of here. “You don’t speak English too good, do you?” he said nastily. “What with your rotten translation yesterday…”

“Rotten?” she said. Her voice was cool now, and in a pleasing register. He wondered how many of these Indian warriors she’d had to fight off. “What do you mean?”

“You lied to them, lady,” he said. “You told them I wanted to be a damn Indian. And I told you I did not want to be one.”
