When I write about tarot as a tour guide, I’m working from a number of levels.
This book is a tour guide for new tarot students as they begin their tarot journey.
For more experienced readers, I offer new perspectives and ideas, especially the idea that tarot guides us through the spiritual journey of life.
I have long held the belief that tarot is more than a simple fortune-telling device. I want people who read this book to broaden their understanding of tarot as a tool for spiritual growth and to view their tarot study as a spiritual journey.
A metaphysical understanding of the four elements has been a cornerstone of my spiritual journey. Viewing tarot from an elemental perspective makes it easy to learn and use the cards. Viewing life from an elemental perspective gives us the ability to maintain equilibrium on a constantly shifting planet.
In this book, I present the four elements as a way of understanding tarot, and as a way of understanding life.
As in any field, the world of tarot has specific words that may be new to you. One of the words you will encounter in this book is magick. Many metaphysical practitioners spell magick with a ‘k’ to separate it from stage magic. In this book, you will learn ways to use tarot cards to attract and manifest your desires. We call this tarot magick.
Another word you will see is querent. This is an old-fashioned tarot word. It refers to the person who is receiving the tarot reading. Other words used to mean the same thing are questioner, sitter and client.
The word significator refers to a tarot card, or position in a tarot spread, that represents a specific person.
In this book, you will learn to invoke energies or to perform invocations. An invocation is a process, usually using spoken words, that calls on a particular spirit or energy to bring specific aid. Invocations are like prayers, and are used as part of magick.
You will also see the word divination. Divination, or the verb “to divine,” is to use metaphysical means to seek answers that are not necessarily knowable by mundane means. Tarot is a tool of divination.
What’s In This Book
In this book, you will find descriptions of the seventy-eight tarot cards, as well as tarot spreads. You will find discussions about tarot, and many ways you can use it.
Some of what you will find will be traditional tarot information. Some of the information is completely original, gleaned from nearly two decades of professional tarot reading.
With this information, you will be able to learn about the cards, and ways of reading them. You will be able to understand many ways of incorporating tarot as a useful tool in every aspect of your life.
You will also find many tarot exercises that will help you explore tarot “hands-on”. These exercises may involve pulling cards at random, or choosing cards cognitively. The exercises may require you to meditate on a card or to write about a card.
Some exercises and informational sections are specifically for tarot beginners. I’ve labeled these “Clues for the Beginner,” although advanced readers may enjoy them, too.
A few exercises are more complex. I’ve labeled these “Exercises for the Advanced Student.”
I’ve designed some of the exercises to teach about the four elements, or other spiritual concepts, as well as about the cards.
You will also find guided meditations, and instructions for using tarot for magick and manifestation.
The first chapter of this book discusses the concept of the spiritual journey, and tarot as an important tool on that journey. You will be asked to begin keeping a tarot journal.
Chapters Two, Three and Four of this book will teach a little bit about each of the seventy-eight tarot cards. If you are already familiar with tarot, think of it as a refresher course, or an opportunity to get a new perspective on the cards. Then use your tarot journal to reflect on the cards and enjoy the exercises in each chapter.
If you are new to tarot, take the time to think about each of the cards. You do not need to commit them to memory yet. Simply read the passages, look at your cards, and see if the descriptions and interpretations make sense to you. Then use your tarot journal to do the exercises, and enjoy the beginning of your tarot journey.
Chapter Five will introduce you to different ways of seeing and understanding tarot as a whole. Chapter Six will show you ways of reading tarot, and introduce you to some tarot spreads. Chapter Seven will take you on an in-depth journey into the four elements, and help you understand how to use elemental thinking in tarot interpretation, magick, and to promote personal balance and wellness.
The final four chapters are each dedicated to one of the four elements. Each chapter will show you ways of using tarot to honor that element in your life. You will learn that there is no aspect of life that tarot cannot touch. Tarot can assist you in every possible circumstance you will ever encounter. Tarot truly is a tour guide on the exciting adventure of life.
