Safe Haven

Author(s): Naomi Stone

Beth Talbot, psychometrist for Team Guardian, is the only witness who can identify a rogue Talent waging a quiet campaign to take over the world's banking establishments. Before she knows it, Beth is running for her life. David Connolly, Coordinator of the local Team is determined to protect Beth--and his reasons become more personal by the minute--while the Team works to identify and stop the rogue before it's too late.

“I know you’re in there, Denise! Open up or I swear I’ll kill you this time!” More pounding. The not-so-heavy wooden door shook in its frame.
What on earth?Beth had to get out of here. No way did she want to meet the guy pounding on her door. The smell of smoke came stronger now. Piercing beeps insisted on her notice. Somebody’s alarm had picked it up.
Call the police? She moved toward the bedroom and its window letting onto a fire escape. Get out first, call later. The sound of breaking glass stopped her. A cloud billowed through the bedroom door, stinging her eyes. Tear gas?
“Throw out your weapons and come out with your hands in the air!” A bullhorn sounded from the alley below. “You have one minute to exit the building.”
What the hell?Choking and coughing on the clouded air, Beth dropped to her knees, crawling to the kitchen, pushing the dulcimer case ahead of herself.
The pounding at her apartment door continued, accompanied by the sounds of shouting and splintering wood. My god. Call the police? Sounded like the police were already here and not to help her. Sirens sounded from down the street. Fire department?
Too much happening too fast. Where the hell were her specs? She scrabbled through her bag like a cat in hot pursuit at a mouse hole. Right now she had no patience for her own reluctance to wear the Team communications device on a regular basis. So what if they felt awkward and carried echoes of emotional calls?
Her front door tore open with a harsh, splintering crash. More sounds of breaking glass, feet hitting the floor in her bedroom, something else crashing to the floor…her nice, Tiffany style beside lamp? More sirens, closer.
Crouching behind the kitchen counter, Beth pulled the specs forth in triumph from their inner pocket in her bag and slammed them onto her face, simultaneously activating the emergency beacon. The tear gas and the smoke of a burning building stung her eyes, squeezed shut now as she focused on her call.
“Beth Talbot. You’ve got my address. Emergency lift required. Door and window open—target this signal. Code Red. STAT!”
Gunfire from the living room. Beth huddled into the deepest corner of the kitchen, an arm cradling her head, the other clutching dulcimer and shoulder bag.
