Halley's lost a lot to the war including two family members. When the chance to fight in the cavalry comes along she decides not to let her gender get in the way. She can wield a whip ten times than any old man and fire a shotgun right after. What she finds in the woods may not want to be found but she'll bring it home and put it to good use. Posing as a good ole boy proves to be harder than she initially thought and it makes transporting her chocolate gift more difficult than she expected.
Halley couldn't see three foot in front of her face. Sounds got louder closer to the swamp. The bullfrogs scared her more than anything. "Grrroack." She remembered back to a time when a soldier had come upon her with two stumps for arms, the flesh still bleeding, and tonight she was more terrified than that. That dead flesh smell almost did her in. Weird how some memories came back with smells and tastes. Just a few old swamp belly creatures, she thought to herself, nothing to be scared of.
The hairs on her arms stood up despite the many layers of clothing that encompassed her body. The mare stopped without direction and swayed her head side to side. "Neigh," came out in a rumble before the horse pawed at the ground with her right front hoof.
"Wh-ho's there?" Halley asked softly. Of course nothing answered. Her hand rested on her gun. "Answer me or I'll shoot ya."
Surely Lewis wouldn't mess around with me like this, she hoped. So it's got to be someone, or something, else. Shivers coursed up her spine and caused her entire body to shake involuntarily. Granny always says that happens when a spirit walks atop your grave.
A stick broke in half to the left of her. She slipped down on the left side of the mare and turned carefully to take in her surroundings. Up ahead the shadow of a person passed between the trees. Halley lifted her gun and fired dead ahead.
