Author(s): K. Lyn

Sadie believes she has found true happiness when she meets a young veterinarian.  Her ex, however, harbors bad feelings toward her and resents her ability to move on without him.  When Sadie agrees to visit him in an effort to provide some form of closure for the two of them, she discovers that her ex has become a wealthy man in a very shady business.  He makes her an offer that she may not be able to refuse without risking her life or the life of her new lover.

Excerpt:
Sadie opened the door and saw her ex-boyfriend for the first time in over a year.  He threw his arms around her and kissed her on the mouth before she had a chance to stop him.  Closing the door with a kick, he noticed the flowers on the dresser.  “Mmm, I know I didn’t send those, so someone must have a new beau.”

“I met a man recently,” she said timidly.  Sadie felt shy in the presence of her ex, and he seemed to have more confidence than she remembered.  “You seem different, Lin.”

“Do I?  I’m not the shy guy you remember?”

“No.”

Lin pulled Sadie to him and kissed her possessively on the mouth.  “I’m a businessman now, Sadie, a wheeler and dealer, and I usually get what I want.”

“Come to my room for dinner.  I’m having some friends over.”

Sadie reluctantly agreed.  When she knocked on Lin’s door, it wasn’t Lin who opened it.  “Sadie, come in.  Lin has told us so much about you.”  Sadie walked into the room and was very quickly handed a glass of hard liquor that made her cough.

“What is it?” she asked.

“Nothing but the best,” Lin spoke up, appearing out of nowhere it seemed.  He put his arm around her and bragged, “This is Sadie.”

“Ah, yes, come and sit with me, Sadie,” one of the men said.

“Sadie, Mr. Madison is very wealthy and very influential.”  Lin gave her a stern look, so she sat down beside the stranger.  “Lin and I have started a business together, and you can be a part of our grand enterprise.”

Sadie couldn’t figure these guys out.  What did they want?  “Ah, my dear Sadie, Mr. Madison and I know all about your, well, love of pharmaceuticals.  I hate to call it an addiction, but I may as well call it what it is.  You are addicted, aren’t you, Sadie?”

Sadie gulped and tried to play it cool.  “I don’t have an addiction.”

Lin sat down on the opposite side of Sadie so that she was sandwiched between the two men.  He put his hand on her thigh, daring her to remove it.  “Now, Sadie, we can quibble about what it really is all we want, but according to a Miss Karen Browning, who discovered a full bottle of Percocet as well as a half full bottle of Klonopin upon your sudden departure, you have an addiction.  She immediately reported the drugs to the school authorities.  It’s a good thing you decided to drop out.  You would have been dismissed had you not left voluntarily.”

Sadie was livid.  It was just like the uppity rich girl to rat her out.  Karen could have thrown the bottles away, but she had no doubt gained big points with the dean.  “What has that got to do with you two?”
