Ingredient for Murder

Author(s): Dr. Sue Clifton, Nyoka Beer

"Keep an open mind and an open path and the way will find you." K.C. Bridger and her sister Wy Hampton live by these words, the teaching of their father and giver of their gift of seeing into the past. The way leads them through a bloodstained cookbook to Spanish Oaks Plantation where restless spirits channel the sisters. Joseph, owner of Spanish Oaks, and his daughter Sophia become ghost-hunters-in-training as they join K.C. and Wy in answering: Who murdered Princeton's wife Beatrice Broussard on the night of May 30, 1848, and why was her portrait slashed? Where is the priceless heirloom, La Fleur? In solving the mysteries, the four also hope to find out who is stealing from Spanish Oaks in the present. Questions are answered and the spirits are given eternal rest as the portals open and K.C. revisits that fateful night in 1848.

"Well, he better not fall in love, because my sister likes her single life. She was married to a sweet guy, Steve, and it didn't hurt that he was a well-to-do doctor and spoiled her rotten. Steve died a couple of years ago and would be a hard act to follow. She keeps telling me she's not looking, but she still likes to have fun."

"What about her sister? Is she looking for a follow-up to…?"

"Cody. His name was Cody, and believe it or not, he owns a construction company; builds oil refineries, chemical plants, and other stinky-but-lucrative endeavors. I bet you didn't know you had so much in common with my ex."

"I know one thing I'd like to have in common with him if she'd give me half a chance." Joseph took her hand again.

"Remember, I scared Cody away—from our marriage, anyway—but we're still friends."

"And therein lies the difference. You don't scare me, K.C. You fascinate the hell out of me. Will you give me a chance? I promise not to make any more rude remarks, at least not for the rest of the day. Besides, I might piss you and your sister off, and then I wouldn't stand a chance for sure."

"How could I resist a deal like that? Let's shake on it." K.C. held out her hand.

"I've got a better idea." Pulling to the side of the road, Joseph pulled K.C. across the console and kissed her; a long, passionate kiss.
