Be careful what you wish for...
Ophelia’s had a wicked crush on Martin since they were kids, but she was always just his geeky little friend. Then, on the first day of her junior year, he’s suddenly and wildly attracted to her. She can’t imagine what’s changed, but shocking her small school’s social order fills her with vindication for insults suffered.
Ophelia meets Adrian right after and true love extinguishes the wicked crush. In secret, he gives her courage against a specter threat.
Tristan is pale and hungry, and draws Martin’s immediate ire. He knows things about Ophelia which she assumes are delusions brought on by an aggravated illness like her own, diabetes. When battle breaks out between his ancient race and new blood, even the courage of her secret love might be crushed.
“What do you mean? Are you going to eat me?”
Tristan jerked his head from side to side. “No, I would never! You’re an empath, as well as a Sweet. You’re very precious to my kind.”
“What kind’s that?”
“The Brynners are evil!”
Ophelia chuckled. “You’re delirious. Martin’s parents are weird, but…”
“I’ll try to escape them, bring back help. If I can send word to Joseph…”
“Joseph, he’s the only one powerful enough to…”
Ophelia had enough of his inane babble. “Okay, that’s enough. I’m taking you to the clinic now.”
“You have such…such a beautiful mind.” Tristan looked ready to cry. No tears appeared. He didn’t even blink. “I sense a presence mingled with your thoughts. You’ve already selected a mate.”
“A mate? I’m sixteen and I want to be an archaeologist. Do you have any idea how many years of college I have ahead of me?” She reached behind his shoulders to help him stand.
“You’re an empath. You can’t help yourself. It is the natural way for you.”
“Uh, okay. Up you go.” Ophelia tried to help him stand, but he was immovable.
“You have no idea.” His lips twisted, but still no tears came. “You will accept no other as long as he lives.”
Ophelia withdrew from him and suddenly felt very strange in his presence. “Are…are you talking about…Adrian?”
“I…hate…” Tristan choked on his words “…that you’ve seen me like this, that you’ve only ever seen me like this.”
“Everyone gets sick.”
