Archangel

Author(s): Misa Buckley

Small time crook Gabriel Kemp is only trying to make a living when a hit-and-run leaves him for dead. Waking up in hospital to an angel at his bedside gives him a second chance, but one that comes with a condition.

Fleeing San Francisco doesn’t mean he can evade the deal either – he still manages to meet Abigail Harris, the woman he’s promised to protect. He might not believe in the psychic visions she claims to have, but he knows even the chance of her identifying the serial killer terrorizing downtown L.A. puts her in danger.

The only way to keep Abby safe is to find and stop the killer. If that means taking on the devil determined to turn the City of Angels into the City of Hell on Earth, then so be it.

Excerpt

A cold shower cooled my libido and restored my perspective. Grounded, I got dressed and went back into the bedroom. Abigail had tamed her curls into a braid and was flicking through TV channels.

“Bathroom’s free if you want it,” I pointed out, in case she’d failed to notice my reappearance.

“I’ve no clothes,” she said. “And I’m guessing going back to the shop is out of the question.”

“You guess right.” I wondered if Jophiel had sorted out the slight hiccup with my finances. “We’ll have to get more on our way out.”

She turned. “Out where?”

“Out of LA. Don’t ask, because I’ve not decided yet.”

Her eyes opened wide. “I can’t leave! I’ve got a contract! My angels!”

“Tough.” Cruel to be kind, and all that. “Whoever is after you wants you badly, Abigail, and none of that stuff is worth your life.”

“But—”

I tossed her my cell. “Ring Manny. Warn him that he might be in danger and ought to give the shop a wide berth for a couple of days.”

She sat a little straighter and dialed a number. Manny’s outraged voice was audible as I packed the few clothes I’d taken out of my rucksack. The constant change in my life was something I was used to, but whether Abigail would cope with it was a different matter. Her variable temperament indicated a possible mental imbalance that would not be helped by the stress she was under. I could only limit that so much, though. The rest I could only worry about.

“He’s a little pissed,” Abigail reported as she came over and handed my cell back. “He thinks you’ve kidnapped me.”

“Yes, because kidnappers routinely let their victims ring their friends.” I jerked the zipper on my bag closed. “He’s an ass.”

“He’s worried about me. I’ve assured him that I’m okay and that you know what you’re doing.” She paused and looked at me. “You do know what you’re doing, right?”

“Haven’t got a clue,” I admitted. “But if I don’t know, then nobody else does either.”
