Chain Reaction

Author(s): Richard Hacker

When Nick takes a client caught in an apparent grudge between competitive bass fishermen, he discovers he has unknowingly entangled himself in the secessionist plot of healthcare magnate, Bruce Reynolds, to create the sovereign nation of Texas. Hoping to pass the case to the Texas Rangers, Nick is instead recruited to head the Governor’s special task force. Complicating Nick’s task, Reynolds is Governor Fran Adamson’s major campaign contributor and secret lover.

Faced with Reynolds’ remotely controlled drone air force destroying strategic targets across the state, Nick and his partner and sometimes lover, Theresa, make a desperate attempt to prevent civil war, the destruction of the Governor’s political career, and a client’s murder, while keeping their love intact.

In his scheme for glory, Bruce Reynolds didn’t plan on Nick Sibelius, who wants the wannabe secessionist to know, when he says don’t screw with Texas, he damned well means it.

Excerpt

He grabbed Dillon by the shoulders. “Listen to me, Dillon. You listening?”

“Yeah, yeah I’m listenin’. Just make it fast.”

“Given the circumstances, the police will want a statement.”

“What?”

“If you run, you’ll only raise more suspicion. You need to give them a statement.”

“But—”

Nick looked to Dolores. Her eyes teared up for the man she loved because he was the brother of the man she loved. Theresa had the look folks get at a free puppy giveaway. And Nick knew in that moment, he was coming home with a puppy, whether he liked it or not. How did I get myself into this?

Dillon pleaded, “Yeah, you gotta help me, Nick.”

He released his grip on Dillon, now that the fishermen appeared to not be doing a runner. “And why is that,Dillon?”

“I figure this situation is just like Babe Ruth used to say. We all hang together or we all hang separately.”

Dillon must have skipped history class. “You’re thinking of Benjamin Franklin.”

“Franklin? What team did he play for? Must’ve been double A ball.”

While Dillon seemed pretty worked up and in all probability there was a dead body floating in Lake Travis, the case looked small and low profile. Nick took solace in knowing at least he wasn’t facing some neo-Nazi or a terrorist this time. Small and low profile had become his mantra in the last few months. He let out a long sigh. “Okay, I’ll look into it. I promise.”

Dolores threw her arms around him. “Thank you, Nick.” Releasing him, she put an arm around Dillon’s waist. “Now you do what he says, Dillon. For me. You hear? You die on me like Harlan and I swear to God, I’ll kill you.”
