Hey You

A Run Devil Run Novella

Author(s): Valerie Mann

Playing by the rules…

Cara spent her entire life doing just that—dutiful daughter, stellar student, responsible adult…in a word…nerd. Not that she had much choice. The Society, a secret moral social order she’d been born into, had one motivating tool in its arsenal to ensure members didn’t succumb to temptation and break any of its laws—

The Watcher…

A demon whose sole mission consisted of waiting for his watch to break the rules—and bring them to—

The Dark...

Marek sucked at his job. Not only did he hate being a Watcher, but he’d fallen in love with his watch, Cara, placing his eternal soul in peril. Only able to protect her in her dreams, when she reaches a crossroad in her life that puts her mortality in jeopardy, they have to decide who will give the greater gift.

Will Cara sacrifice her mortality for Marek’s love…or will he sacrifice his soul to save her life?

~Excerpt~

“Hey, you.”

Cara smiled from her perch on the steps but didn’t look up. Black boots and denim-clad legs came into view as he descended the stairs and joined her.

“Where’d you bring me this time?” Marek stared out at the lake. Thunder rolled miles away, like a low drumbeat.

“My grandparents’ cottage. I spent a lot of time here as a kid before they sold it.”

“Good memories, then?”

“The best.”

He nodded, his eyes wistful, but he didn’t respond.

She wanted to know more about him. Find out who he’d been, before…he wasn’t.

“What about you? Any vacation spots you’d like to....” She trailed off before she started stammering like a first-year law student. Regret burned her face.

“Like to visit again if I weren’t a demon?” He finished her question. “Of course I would.” The corner of his mouth twitched. “Don’t apologize. You can ask me anything, Cara.”

Elbows on knees, she propped her face in her hands. A fish jumped, the ripples from the splash spreading and dissipating. Wind pushed ahead of the storm, the water chopping against the shore.

“You know what I’m really sorry about?” She turned her head to look at him. When he lifted his chin for her to continue, she said, “I wish we’d met before….”

“I know.”

They lapsed into silence again. He leaned over and nudged her shoulder with his. “You can ask, you know.”

Dreams being what they are, she knew what he meant. “It’s impolite to ask personal questions of someone you don’t know.”

He chuckled. “For all intents and purposes, we practically live together, Cara. You’ve earned the right.” He nudged again. “Go ahead. Ask me.”

Uncomfortable with the personal turn the conversation had taken, she shook her head. What’d been so bad that he’d been sent to the Dark? Honestly, she wasn’t sure she wanted to know what Marek had done. And, she was more than a little afraid the knowledge would color her view of him. She bent over, picked up a sharp stone and started carving shapes into the wooden step at her feet.

“Maybe I want to tell you.”

That gave her pause. She straightened and looked at him. He stared back, his expression open and sincere.

Please don’t make me ask the question. “Tell me then.”

“Ask and I’ll tell you.” His mouth twitched.

God, he was absolutely adorable. For a Watcher. “Stubborn much?”

He grinned. Her heart slammed against her sternum in response, that one gesture more than anything he’d done to date gave her a clear glimpse of the man he’d been before he’d been stripped of his mortality. And just like that, it didn’t matter in the slightest to her what he may have done. His soul was intact, no matter where he was.
