Transient Hearts

A Western Escape

Author(s): Zee Monodee

Indo-British chef Shayne Morea is at her wit's end in London, where her mother and aunts are matchmaking her life to within an inch of the gates of Hell.

When an opportunity to come to Freewill, Wyoming arises to teach the owner of The Hometown Bakery how to make Indian sweets, Shayne jumps on the offer.

Tata London and Southall. Howdy hot cowboy land!

New York Forex broker, Grayson Warner, left Freewill at eighteen and never looked back. Blessed with the Midas touch, everything Grayson undertakes turns into gold. Everything except his own peace of mind…which he knows he will find only once he confronts his demons back in Freewill.

Shayne and Grayson meet, and little by little, each opens up about the past, and how they view the present. Neither is willing to touch upon the subject of the future, because both are only in transit in Freewill. Or are they…?

Can two transient hearts ever find a final port of call?

He nodded toward Shayne. “Won’t you introduce us?”

Aurelie shook her head and pulled his hand, drew him closer to the table. “Silly of me. Grayson, this is Shayne, a good friend of mine. She just got here from England, and she’s staying over for the summer—”

“She’s staying here?”

Shayne bristled, spine growing tense, at the note of incredulity in his tone. Excuse me?

“Well, of course she is, silly.”

“I thought,” he started, looked away from Shayne, “it’d be just us. My mistake—”

The gall of him. Shayne jumped to her feet. “You know, if this is a private matter, I’ll leave. There’s got to be a place in town—”

“Don’t be absurd,” Aurelie said. “You’re staying with us, period.”

The man named Grayson, whom Shayne saw more as the “arrogant, stuck-up pig named Grayson,” lowered his gaze farther and started at the door.

“I think this is a bad idea,” he said.

“Don’t be daft.” Aurelie tugged on his arm. “You’ve come back home after fourteen years. You’re not gonna leave already.”

“I made a mistake—”

He stopped when the screen door burst open. His whole demeanor changed when his gaze landed on Tracy Parks, Aurelie’s mother. He tensed his jaw, curled his hands into fists. If she squinted, she’d say for certain the set line of his pursed mouth trembled a little when the older woman stopped dead in her tracks and stared at him.

“Grayson,” Tracy finally said in a whimper full of pain and longing.

“Aunt Tracy.” His voice sounded even lower.

Tears trailed down Tracy’s pale cheeks, and without another word, she reached out and enclosed him in her arms.

He stiffened, before he brought his arms up and clung to her frail body. He reminded Shayne of a lost child right then, and she frowned.

Aurelie had tears on her dark cheeks.

Family reunion. Totally awkward time for her. She took a step toward the hallway when Tracy broke the silence, exclaiming how happy Grayson had made her, and Shayne froze.

Blast. She came from Indian bloodlines, and she loved a good drama-filled moment. After all, she’d grown up on Bollywood fare and Star One and Zee TV soaps. Try as she wanted, she couldn’t tear her feet from the floor to leave the room and give the Parks the privacy they deserved as they reunited with the Grayson fellow.

Who could this man be?

Curiosity ate at her, and she shifted from foot to foot, hoping Tracy would let her out of her inquisitive misery soon.
