Excerpt:
"I am part of an ancient race that calls itself Visitors because that is what we do.  We're so extremely long-lived that none can remember a time when we didn't exist, and none have been born or died that anyone alive can remember.  We travel among the stars seeking out planets with life-forms that are promising with potential, but that might need a bit of nudging along to achieve what they are capable of doing..."
 "Which is?"  Yuri leaned forward.
"To achieve space travel so that you can join us among the stars, of course!  What else is there? I have visited  your beautiful planet many times over many hundreds of thousands of years. Each planet has a species that exhibits potential even when it is still in an early stage of development.  The primitive apes I encountered so long ago were one such species.  I merely provided a bit of genetic material to expand the intelligence of your species before leaving to visit the other end of the universe.  I have been back a
few times, each time contributing a tiny amount of myself to your species, in hopes of someday being met by you in starships of your own."
"Genetic material?"  Yuri asked suspiciously.  "That sounds like you have had sex with human females..."
The man shrugged, "That isn't always possible when races are too different from myself," he grinned.  "But no one says I have to dislike my job."
"Now I have answered questions for you, it's time for you to answer some of mine. Why haven't you met me among the stars yet?  Your race was so promising that I have a bet going with another Visitor
that my favorite species in this part of the universe is going to beat his favorite species into star travel.  You had such a promising start years ago, what with your race into space and your landing on the moon.  Yet his species is already sending colonists out to other planets and you humans are still busy
despoiling your environment and wallowing in your own filth.
Why?
What happened?"
