Recipe for Disaster

Book Title: Recipe for Love

Author(s): Bobbi Dumas

Life isn’t always what it seems. Sara returned to the one place in her life where she’d always felt safe—always felt special. Her built-in roommate had just been voted Bachelor of the Year.  Though she’d loved him from childhood, how could she—a woman who’d already been scorned by one man—ever compete with the bevy of beautiful woman who would no doubt want him? Will Jason turn out to be one more thing in her life she can’t have, or will her roommate have more surprises than being voted Bachelor of the Year?

“Sara, it’s Justin.”

“Oh.” Startled, she eyed the women around her warily. “I can’t talk right now.”

“Well, we have to.” His tone was frustrated and impatient. In her mind’s eye, she could see him run long fingers through his hair in irritation.  She knew this mood, his general attitude around her.  Which wasn’t often really, so why did it matter?  The thought depressed her anyhow.

The office women still hovered around her desk—now wide-eyed with fascination—as if they could divine the speaker on the other end of the line.

She cleared her throat delicately, as heat rose up her neck and said, “Hold on...” into the phone, then smiling in a way that made plastic Barbies come to mind, she addressed the spontaneous desk assembly. “Would you mind excusing me for a minute?  I have to take this call.”

“Sure, honey.” Sara tried to ignore Tracy’s smug smile, and she definitely ignored Abby’s “go get ‘em, Tiger” as well as the various whispered comments that seemed to have something to do with surprise and wonder that Sara, of all people, could pull off such a score.

Someone pulled the door closed behind them with a resounding thud and a vast silence.

“Have you seen the article?” His voice, clipped and edgy, vibrated tension.

He sighed with what seemed relief, and his voice relaxed slightly. “Yeah, article.  Listen, Sara, Chicago Today apparently named me Bachelor of the Year...”

“Right, I saw that.”

“But you just said...”

Amazing how well a voice transmits tension.

“I didn’t know there was an article. Some women I work with just showed me the cover. You look good, Justin, congratulations.” Her voice wavered; suddenly, she felt like she wanted to cry.  Don’t be silly, Sara. He doesn’t owe you anything. Not one thing. If anything... But no, she wouldn’t go there. She cleared her throat yet again before she continued. “So anyway, I haven’t slept much in the last couple of days—

there’s a mountain of proposals I’ve been working on, and I have to go.”

“Congratulations? God help me,” he muttered. “Sara, listen...”

She really was exhausted. She’d been working far too hard this past week, and she couldn’t think straight. Now was not the time to try to have any kind of meaningful conversation with Justin.  Especially the sexy, woman-magnet that was on the cover of that magazine.
