“What are you doing here?” he asked. He appeared angry, she realized, but didn’t know why.

 “The news segment said you needed help,” she murmured. She held up the basket of bread. “I’m helping.”

 “Money would have been preferred,” he announced sarcastically. “But I know your boyfriend would prefer to close this place down than donate money.”

 “Boyfriend?” she asked, and then realized he meant Jared. When he turned away, she followed him to the door. “Jared is not my boyfriend. We went on a date, that’s it, why I’m telling you this, I don’t know.” She set the basket on the counter as she followed him into the hallway.

 He turned on her and glared down at her. “Listen, if he has you here trying to catch Darla and me in the act, he’ll be sadly mistaken. We aren’t lovers. Never have been, never will be. Understand?”
