Star Sapphire

Author(s): Michael Barnette

Johnny Sapphire is a drifter, sometime cowhand, and called a gunslinger by some. He's really a lonely gay man looking for someone to share his life.
Moses Star, half black, half Cherokee has been a slave, a river boat gambler, and a bounty hunter. When the two of them meet, sparks will fly, but they won't be the kind that comes from their six shooters.

From downstairs he could hear the cowboys arguing with the desk clerk but couldn't quite make out what was being said. Not until the cowhands started up the stairs. Then he could hear them calling him a yellow dog, among other colorful names. Had he been an actual gunfighter, those words would be more than enough to earn them a free lead dinner. They reached the door and started banging on it with their fists.
Johnny sighed and hoped the clerk went for the sheriff before they broke the door. He glanced at the window of his room and came to a decision. He stuffed his gear into his saddlebags, made sure his newly purchased tobacco, rolling papers, and the peppermint sticks were well protected and climbed out of the window. The rain was coming down in buckets. Careful of his footing, Johnny crossed the narrow roof and jumped to the street below. His foot slipped and he almost went down on his ass in the mud, but regained his footing and headed for the livery. He'd make himself scarce and hang out in the stall with Blue until he was sure the men left the hotel.
Regardless what that pair of men thought, he was notgoing to do their bosses' dirty work and kill anyone. Nope. Wasn't going to happen.
Dripping wet--again--Johnny entered Abner's livery and came face to face with the handsome, black man he'd seen playing cards the night before. Suddenly he realized that thiswas the man the pair of cowboys--or their boss--wanted him to kill.
"Greetings, fellow drowned rat," the man said as he stood wringing out his shirt beside the stall that held the brindle mare. His voice had a deep, mellow quality that made Johnny think of the type of sipping whiskey he preferred.
Johnny made no attempt to hide the smile the man's words brought to his lips. "Howdy," he replied as he put his saddlebags over the wall of an empty stall and removed his own soaked shirt.
The man put his shirt over the mare's stall door then turned to Johnny, hand out in a friendly greeting. "Name's Moses Star."
Johnny'd heard of the man. Sometime gambler, part-time bounty hunter, known to be fast on the draw. It explained a great deal. Especially the whybehind them trying to hire his gun to fight their battle.
"Johnny Sapphire," he replied as he took the man's damp hand in his own. Something strange passed between them then. Their eyes met. Johnny felt Moses' hand tighten slightly on his own and he returned the pressure. It wasn't anything aggressive, rather he sensed Moses was a man after his own heart, another hombre who'd rather spend time with men than seek the company of women.
