The Demon's Princess

The Otherworldly Series #1

Trapped in what she at first deems a nightmare, Lucinda Hayworth finds herself living day to day life in Atlanta, in a distant cousin's body – in 1896. Deciding to blend in while she tries to find a way back to her time, she goes through life as Lucinda Caden… a wealthy debutante. At a ball, she meets Alexander, a prince visiting from a small unknown kingdom in the Atlantic. While Lucinda Caden may be from an influential family, she doesn’t feel worthy of Alex’s attention – especially knowing that she’s really just a modern girl of middle class status trapped in another time.

When Lucinda discovers Alex is more than what he says, she still wants to be with him. Her parents, however, have other ideas. Shoving her in the direction of a long-term family friend, Jonathan, they forbid her from seeing the prince. In an attempt to escape the unwanted attentions of Jonathan Statton, she meets the Earl of Leamont, Benton Richards. While she will always love Alex, Lucinda must decide if she will wait for him forever, or if she will give herself a chance at happiness with someone else.

Circumstances will force Lucinda to choose - the demon prince who holds her heart, or the man who treats her like a princess.

Excerpt

The night of the ball found me dressed in a lavish gown of lavender satin. My maid had been slightly scandalized at my dress with its scooped neckline and short puffed sleeves. Apparently, I'd never worn anything cut lower than my neck before, despite the fact that my dress was the height of fashion – or so the seamstress had declared.
As I looked at my reflection in the mirror, the realization that this Lucinda could've been my twin startled me. The same willowy body. The same long brown hair. Even the same freckles sprinkled across my nose. I didn’t have much in the chest area, so I didn’t understand all the fuss. It wasn’t like I would spill out of the dress.

While Jonathan may have had a car, my parents preferred the use of a carriage. As I entered the horse-drawn conveyance, butterflies erupted in my stomach. I had no idea how to dance in this time, and I felt certain someone would ask me to. I’d have to come up with something clever.

My mother and father escorted me into the ball, and then promptly left me with a group of giggling girls. It didn’t take long for me to learn their names, as they talked non-stop. However, when the stranger with dark hair, dark eyes, and swarthy skin entered, even my friends hushed. Everyone stared in open fascination as the young man of regal bearing descended the stairs, his eyes sweeping over the crowd as if searching for something or someone.

When his gaze settled on me, my breath froze in my lungs. I couldn’t tell his nationality. Italian? Hispanic? Either way, the young man set my heart to flutter. If I'd thought Jonathan looked amazing, I'd been sadly mistaken. His looks didn’t compare to the stranger now heading my way.

The girls surrounding me all held their breath, hoping he came to see them and not me. It would've made more sense for him to seek out the company of Suzette, a blonde with an envious figure, but for whatever reason, he sought me. When he stopped in front of me, I had to tilt my head back to look at him. He towered over my five-foot frame by more than a foot, making me feel smaller than I usually did.

“May I have this dance?”

His voice soothed like warm honey with an accent I couldn’t place and sent chills through me. Without realizing it, I gave him my hand and let him lead me onto the dance floor. A moment later, he led me in a waltz. I should have been nervous, having never danced like this before, but I wasn’t. The gentleman holding me in his arms mesmerized me, which allowed him to lead me like a puppet master. With his arms around me, I think I would've followed him anywhere.
