Bewere of Faeries

Author(s): Jessica Coulter Smith

Thrust in a whirlwind from situation to situation and man to man. Lexi is on a roller coaster ride trying to take back control of her life. Because she doesn’t see her family, she’s still trying to figure out her legacy. As if that isn’t hard enough, she has 6 men vying for her hand in marriage, each one with their own agenda, leading to a trail of heartache.

Not knowing who to trust, can she find the one man that is meant to be hers forever, or is she destined to be alone?

It stalked her in the shadows, watching, waiting. She could feel its eyes boring into her and knew that it was waiting for just the right moment to strike. But was it human, or something else? Alex stared into the night. She’d seen the figure of a man under the tree outside her window for several nights. Yet, it seemed to be more than just a man, if such a thing were possible.

Staring out her window, she watched the figure under the tree. So far, he hadn’t moved. He seemed content to just watch. But for how long? He made her nervous, but she didn’t know what to do. She’d called the police once, but he’d left before they arrived, and they’d found no trace of him. She felt helpless against him.

If Michael were still here, he would protect her. But Michael was gone. It had been a year, but she still missed him. Her heart ached every time she thought of him, and she thought of him often. His picture still sat beside her bed so that his smiling face was the last thing she saw every night. Only a year. And yet it felt like an eternity.

If she’d gone home with him that night, would things have turned out differently? No one knew what had caused the accident. It was the not knowing that made it the hardest to accept. What if it had been something she could have stopped? She knew he hadn’t been drinking because that just wasn’t something Michael would have done. He’d always been so responsible.

She looked at the picture now. The smiling blond-haired, blue-eyed guy staring back at her had been her entire world. They’d often talked about going to college together and had even spoken of getting married afterwards. And now she was going through spring term at the local college without him. He hadn’t even had a chance to graduate high school.

Alex looked back out the window. The stranger was gone.

Alex was late, as usual, and went barreling into Langely Hall, the closest building to the parking lot. If she hurried, she might make it to her seat before her English Lit class started. She’d stayed up late after watching her stalker to finish her paper. She just hoped it was decent.

Dashing down the hall, she wasn’t paying attention and bounced off someone. Strong hands gripped her arms to keep her upright. She looked up to thank whoever had just saved her from a nasty spill, but words failed her. Mossy green eyes made her breath catch in her throat. A lock of black hair fell over his forehead, and she fought the urge to brush it back. His broad shoulders made her want to place her hands there, wondering if he felt as strong as he looked.

“Are you okay?” he asked with a grin.

“I-I’m fine,” she managed to stutter.

He smiled and her heart fluttered in her chest. His full lips were doing odd things to her. She felt lightheaded and dizzy and realized she was holding her breath.

“I’m Jonah Emerson,” he said, offering her hand.

She took it and tried to think coherently.

“I’m Alexandra Clarke. But my friends call me Alex.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Alex. I hope we run into each other again today. Well, maybe not literally.”

Feeling slightly dazed, she smiled and watched him walk away. What had just happened? She’d never felt such an instant attraction to someone before, not even Michael. What did it mean?
