Pearls in the Darkness

Author(s): S.E. Connor

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. When Tanner goes on vacation to get away from school and work, he learns this the hard way.

Though he hates water, Tanner agrees to join his older brother and friends away from home for two weeks at the beach. There he meets Chase, a gorgeous local who offers to show him the sights and introduce him to what he's been missing. Against his better judgment, Tanner agrees. He's given the gift of pearls, and his life is quickly turned upside-down as Tucker's friend (and Tanner's long-time crush) Jimmy starts acting strangely.

Tanner learns that there are things in the water that go beyond human understanding, and he's left with two major questions: What is a siren? And why is it hunting Tanner?

Pearls in the Darkness contains dark themes that some readers might find disturbing.

Safe. That was all he wanted. To be safe. And loved. And accepted. Tanner nodded, smiling at Chase. A scantily clad woman slipped up out of nowhere and pressed a glass into his hands. She smiled knowingly at Chase before melting into the crowd. Assuming it to be beer, he smiled his thanks and began drinking. It was most definitely not beer. Sweet and nearly cloying in its pungency, Tanner found himself finishing the drink quickly. "What is this?" he asked upon finishing.

"Mead. We're celebrating. The solstice is once again upon us. And you, Tanner, you're the guest of honor."

It was such a shock to hear those words from Chase, but Tanner couldn't bring himself to be upset. Another red flag, but he shoved it aside. A part of him couldn't understand why it was he was so quick to dismiss his worries, but Chase's voice soothed him. It lulled him and made the rest of the world seem to melt away, until there was nothing but Chase. He smiled, a little surprised by the announcement, and cocked his head. "The guest of honor?"

Chase grinned even more and nodded, holding out a hand. He didn't answer with words. And Tanner found he didn't have the wherewithal to argue. Tanner accepted Chase’s hand and walked, turning his head only once when the empty cup was replaced with a full cup. More mead. It was thicker than beer, and so incredibly sweet. It slid down his parched throat and made his head fuzzy with each swallow. But he couldn't stop.

He didn't want to stop.

Chase encouraged it, pulling Tanner toward a campsite not far from the bonfire. In the center of the circle of tents, was a raised cot. As they entered the circle, yet another cup of mead was given to Tanner, and he found himself moving to the primal, feral beat. Some of the contents of the cup sloshed out, but he could only laugh. He was free! He was standing on a beach, not far from the water, and everything was perfect! Chase laughed with him, and they began dancing, bodies moving together in erotic friction. Draping his free arm around Chase's neck, he teased him with the mead. Chase grinned and shook his head, tipping the cup so Tanner could drink deep.

"Drink and be free, Tanner. Celebrate with us."
