Paraphrased into writing terms, my former WIP has gone out into the world in the form of a submission and I have now returned to the WIP I completed as a first draft over twelve months ago. There were many reasons for the long rewriting period of "Her Brother's Keeper", but none of them matter now that I am back in 1802 on the high seas.
It is always interesting reading a first draft after a period away from it, especially a longer one (90,000 words) because you can see the changes in your ideas as it progressed (the point at which you realized some significant plot feature--good or bad) and the first task is to remove the irrelevancies this creates. I shift them into a cutting file initially, just in case I want to refer to them later, and my initial editing is macro-engineering as I discipline the creative spirit into readability.
The hard work of micro-editing will come later
