Hello, all. I am one of the authors of Whimsical Publications and am taking part in our June Jubilee day here at CTR. I am proud to be one of Janet's authors. She treats us well and goes the extra mile for us, always posting news on the website
www.whimsicalpublications.com (http://www.whimsicalpublications.com)

Mask of the Betrayer, book one in the sequel series, was released in April and is receiving rave reviews. I will post more about it throughout the day. I have an obsession for Mardi Gras and masquerades and my book is full of my fetish for the bizarre and chilling. You can read and view some of my Mardi Gras masks in the special interests area of the forum where author hobbies are being featured. To learn more about me, please visit my website.

Just a little about me and the books I wrote. Hi, all! I'm Janet, and I head this little band of merry people. (waves to the crowd)

I've written three books: After, Stolen and Innocence Taken. The first two are sci-fi books and the last is about a serial killer who preys on young women. I know, I know, but variety is the spice of life. lol

I'll post more in a moment.

Well, here I am; I think!?
My name is Dale Thompson and I write as Pat Dale. My new novel A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND is being released by Whimsical tomorrow. I'm so excited I can't get my fingers coordinated to type this.
I find it interesting that our FBI just arrested ten alleged spies from Russia this week. When I first started writing Best Friend, it was a typical spy story but then 9/11 happened and I set it aside for a few years. When I picked it up again, the storyline had to be totally revamped. I settled for an experienced covert agent whose career was headed south rapidly.
When I plotted the agents in his agency who'd conspired to ice him, my critique partners protested, saying we no longer had Russian spies working against us. Boy, do I feel vindicated or what? LOL
This is a bit long so I'll stop for a sip of my favorite dark roast. Cheers, all.

What do you look for in a good book? A great romance? A great mystery? A plot to make you think? Or a plot to make you escape to far, far worlds?

Tell us what that special "oomph" is about an author that perks your interest and makes you read their work. :)

Miss Mae
June 29th, 2010, 10:26 AM
I'm busy writing, promoting, being a wife and mother, but sometimes I do actually get to read a bit! LOL

I've read books from three authors at WP so far. Anne Patrick (Lethal Dreams), Sharon Donovan (Mask of the Betrayer), and Janet Durbin (After).

These stories were all so different from one another, and each unique. If you like a "weirdo hunting down the heroine", grab Lethal Dreams (http://whimsicalpublications.com/anne_patrick/lethal_dreams.html). If you like psycho tales, immerse yourself in Mask of the Betrayer. (http://whimsicalpublications.com/sharon_donovan/mask_of_the_betrayer.html) If you enjoy a "what if" tale, stick your nose in After. (http://whimsicalpublications.com/janet_durbin/after_info.html)

One great thing about WP (there are several, let me tell you), is that the books don't fall into one cut-and-dried genre. If Janet, the publisher, enjoys the story (even if it's about a Twiddly Winks game--but hey, it needs to be a GOOD story about Twiddly Winks), she contracts it. She won't allow a great story to wither away simply it doesn't fit a certain "mold".

So, come over and check out the variety of WP (http://whimsicalpublications.com/index.html)! :)

My first book is called After. It's about a virus created by the government that gets inadvertantly released and wipes out three quarters of the population on the planet before anyone knows what hit them. Because of this, technology disappears. The world has reverted to medieval like times where the sword rules and transportation is by horse.

Here's a blurb:

After a virus is accidentally released on an unsuspecting world,

After the death of their parents and a large percentage of the planet's population,

After the twins—Shyanne and Drayco—survive, only to watch all technological For the other, it is a living nightmare.

The Boss wants Shyanne badly. Why...they don't know. But they're going to find out. With their animal companion, a genetically altered mountain lion named Drizzle, the twins embark on a cross-country journey.

They encounter many obstacles along the way. The worst is a mercenary named
Ruben. He will stop at nothing to accomplish what he is paid to do, even if it involves killing his own men.

Unfortunately, he succeeds in capturing Shyanne.

Now Drayco must survive his biggest challenge, a challenge filled with pain and
suffering, if he is to help his sister survive the Boss.

The second book in the Journey of Twins series is Stolen. It takes place five years beyond the book After. Here is a blurb:

Five years have passed since the defeat of the Boss. For Shyanne and Joseph, it meant settling down and raising a family. For Drayco, it meant searching for the one who escaped during their last encounter…the mercenary named Ruben.

For the first time since the virus, peace fills Shyanne’s life. Now that peace is shattered. Ruben has returned and he has taken the one thing dearest to her heart…her son.

Once again, Joseph, Drizzle, and the twins embark on a mission filled with battles and hardships. Only this time the stakes are far greater. This time they hope to find Joey before his young life is ended forever.

My third books is not intended for the faint of heart. It deals with a serial killer and is quite graphic. In fact, I have to label it as erotic because of the content. The idea for this book came from watching the news.

Here is a blurb:

Nature Kranderson, a reclusive psychic, stumbles upon the work of a serial killer when she tries to locate a missing teen for her family. For some reason, the killers face remains shrouded. That has never happened before. She has always been able to ID them. It frustrates her, and makes her a little nervous. Unfortunately, she can see everything he does to the girls—every perverted detail—including a wire whisk used on one girl and a riding crop on another. He gets off keeping them naked and using them as often as possible before he becomes disenchanted. When that happens, death follows.

Nature joins forces with Sheriff Web Westerly and begins a cross-country journey that takes them to Florida. Another teenage girl is missing from the Brevard County area, and the police have asked for her help. They want to find the girl before anything happens to her. After they arrive, Nature discovers her disappearance has nothing to do with the 'Man', as she's dubbed the killer.

While in Florida, the police approach her about another missing girl. She was taken from a park near the beach and they suspect it may be the serial killer who has her. Nature confirms their suspicions. Afterwards, thinking her work is done, she gets ready to go home, back to Montana. Before that happens, she is called upon for another case in Daytona. The Man has struck again.

The news people catch wind of the missing girls. They learn of Nature's involvement and track her down, seeking an exclusive interview, flashing her face across the television screen once they locate her. Unfortunately, someone else is watching that day. A serial killer is looking for his next target, and he thinks he may have found her on the news.

The war was over. The town of Esser Crossing
ebbed closer to a slow death while Jodi Parker
and Hunter Johnson fought desperately with
one last chance to save it, and themselves.
Two unlikely people came together against
their own will and struggled to carve a new
empire. Swollen rivers and Jayhawkers were
the least of their troubles on a cattle drive

could easily destroy them. He had to prove

A cruel destiny threw them together. Only
a true and lasting love could save them…

Sharon, I moved your blurb and excerpt to another forum. Here it is: You have two posts with the same title, but they are both different, giving the reader excellent insight so I combined them in the same spot, so they'd be easier to find. :) It's in the "About our books" forum.

As long as you are using the names only, in a way that does not put down the location, it is okay to use the name. Like using McDonalds in a sentence about characters stopping there to eat before moving on. Since nothing bad was said, only what they are doing and where, it is okay.

I have Walmart in my Innocence Taken book. The main characters go inside the store to buy some music. Besides, I'm not sure a name can be copywritten. Trademarked, yes. Not a copyright.

I'm working on a story in which the heroine is a bit quirky. She is constantly quoting lyrics of songs where they fit into her life. I'm wondering how that would work...

Thanks, Janet. Sorry I can't figure out the neat way of replying to posts. I just tried and got confused, again. I have my hero and heroine attending a certain university, much of the story residing there and so mention it several times. I also mention other Big Ten schools as well as the top engineering school out east. I got worried even about mentioning a woman's dorm by name and alluding just in passing to The Golden Girl and Silver Twins. They're in the marching band. Larry

Lyrics are another matter. Those are under copyright and you must have permission to use the lyrics. Brieanna can tell you about that. She had to get permission from the band Nightwish to use their song. She stalked them, sorta, and eventually got the needed permission. Then she went to a concert and had the band members sign the book. Way cool!

destinyrae

Time for some fun stuff!

Quiz: Will you enjoy Destiny's books?

Take this quiz:

1. Should the heroine be soft and sweet or tough as nails or does it matter as long as she is beautiful?
2. Does the hero always need to save the girl?
3. Should the hero be the withdrawn and silent type (maybe brooding) or charismatic and charming or does it not matter if he's handsome?
4. Do you always want a happy ending?
5. Do you enjoying reading romance, mystery, suspense or thriller or a combination?
6. Do you enjoy books with a detailed setting and landscape or do you prefer to get straight to the action?
7. Would you prefer a short, medium or long book?
8. Does the man and woman always have to fall in love?
9. Do you enjoy sex scenes?
10. Do you want a book to be more realistic or more entertaining?

Compare your answers to Destiny's:

1. Usually tough as nails.
2. Yes, unless she saves him.
3. Doesn't matter, just as long as he's sexy.
4. YES!
5. All of the above, or a combination.
6. Get to the action!
7. Any of the above.
8. Yes, of course.
9. Sometimes, if it is appropriate and contributes to the story.
10. Entertaining! Real life is enough reality; reading is an escape.

Are you and Destiny a match? Or close enough? If so, be sure to check out Destiny's Outer Banks Suspense Series at http://www.destinybooze.com The first book, ALTERED BEGINNINGS and the second book, PREDETERMINED ENDINGS are available now!

Dr. Erin Jacobs is making a name for herself in the sports world. Drawing on her own life experiences, she encourages and inspires athletes to recover from career ending injuries. So why would someone want to hurt the good doctor? Detective Logan Sinclair is determined to find that answer. He’s been mesmerized by Erin from the moment she found him and his partner shot in an alleyway. Since that night their lives have never been the same. Will Logan be able to solve the puzzle of who wants Erin out of the way before it’s too late? And if so what impact will those answers have on their lives?

Brandy, most of the review sites I've seen are always looking for reviewers. Long and Short Reviews, Night Owl Reviews, Book Wenches etc.

Just Ask...:flowers: The books have been ebooks. It will be easier if i ever get a reader... I take a book everywhere with me and I just can't do that with my PC so it takes longer. Can you do reviews for more than 1 site... I'd love to if possible...

Do any of you other authors ever get screams of help from the characters imprisoned in your heads?

Absolutely! I've had Shyanne, Drayco, Drizzle and Joseph screaming at me since I started the third book in my series three years ago. Haven't had much time to get to them. I'm going to this summer, for sure.

I also have another book involving the characters from Innocence Taken: Nature and Web. They will be working to solve who is killing off biker members in a gang. That was some fun research. Mostly watched those reality gang shows with notepad in hand.

I am definately going to have to change that book around. Good thing I'm still at the beginning of it. She is still quirky without the song thing. Haha.

And I saw Brieanna's picture with the band. That is really cool!

Way cool!

I love the answer for number 2, the 'Yes. Unless she saves him.' That amazing answer definately caught my eye!

Mine will do the same thing. They will keep on me to write a scene. Many times, I will have it all planned out, but once I get it on paper, a certain character will have other ideas about how a chapter should go. They want it their way. I will finish, sit back, and be caught by surprise at how things turned out. Some characters can be very pushy/demanding.

I have a novel that I wrote where a character was meant to have a one page blip. They were just meant to get the heroine from point A to point B and disappear. This character ended up at her side in the final scene/battle. I was like, "Wow! When did he become so vital to the story?!" He was never meant to be on more than a page, and now he is going to be getting his own short story.

It is amazing how some characters speak to you and demand their story to be told.

My horoscope today says You probably aren't going to feel much like socializing today, dear Aquarius, though friends might want you to go out with them. Your innate patience has worn a bit thin, and you could find yourself getting annoyed at incidents that normally wouldn't bother you. Therefore, this is not a good day for group activities or partying. It might be best if you could get a good workout, then rest. You'll probably feel much better afterwards.

How hilarious is that? Don't feel like socializing? What? It couldn't possibly get it more wrong than that!

Okay...let's talk cover art. I get more nervous about cover art than anything. What kind of cover should The Curse of a Mind have?

Here's the blurb:

From the killer:

No one knows who I am. I answer to no name. Call me rage. Call me vengeance. I am a punisher, an executioner.
There is no fate I fear. No Heaven or Hell. Existence is my curse and my sentence to serve.
I know who will die next.
I swoop inside, unseen, like an apparition. I will kill you. There’s nothing you can do to stop me.
Death has taken me. I am death. Be prepared for my rage. My curse is coming to you…

There's no hope. The killer is using a marvel in the medical field known as techlepathy, a combination of technology and telepathy to produce a telepathic result. He’s reading their minds.

Chris Chambers is a private investigator with great instincts and a shady past. She’s hardened to life, even more so to people, and as tough as the military trained her to be.

Her team’s newest case is a construction worker by the name of Aidan Wolfe. Someone is trying to kill him, someone with extraordinary gifts.

The killer blames Aidan for the injustices in his life, and he wants revenge. He’s coming for Aidan, Chris and her team. He wants them to all die in a terrifying manner, but first, he’ll make them face their worst fears.

The intensity grows as Chris and Aidan deny a growing attraction for each other while they fight to stay alive. Her life is a constant test of discipline, and he makes her feel totally out of control. There is no middle ground for either of them, but in the end, it may not matter, not if they can’t survive.

Can they win? When faced with the inner demons within, will they want to?

No faster than light in this story. Of course, Mona goes along too with others. Larry

I won't tell. Mac & cheese, and peanut butter & honey sandwiches (not at the same time) are a large part of my diet. To shake things up a bit I'll throw in some grilled chicken sometimes. Oh and let's not forget chocolatesmilies/candy.gif

Well, it very well could be that we enjoyed some mac and cheese with the burgers, but I'm not sure I should admit that... So bad.

That's an interesting idea, Brandy.

As a reader how important is the cover art at grabbing your attention?

I think it is important to catch your eye (for a print book) but with ebooks I would say that the title is what does it initially... And I know that idea was weird but it is what came to mind...

Yes, chocolate is another closet addiction of mine. There must be a support groups somewhere for me.

When you find out about that group...don't give them my name. I plan on enjoying the largest bar I can get my hands on. Then I'll make it last by savouring every bite.

I especially love the Charlston Chews. Love the marshmallow insides. Ummmmm...

Your secret is safe with me. Have you ever tried a Watchamacalit? I first tried it because of the name. Now, I'm so in love. Mmmmmmmm....

I feel the same about two shows: Deadliest Catch and Ghost Hunters. I'm not a big fan of Ghost Hunters Academy, though. I love Ice Road Truckers, too.

I do enjoy Ice Road Truckers. My family is full of truck drivers so they like to watch the show and critique the driving.

I wouldn't want to drive a truck in those temperatures. I freeze when it gets below 70, which is why I love down here in the south. :)

I love Deadliest Catch. I always forget when its on though and usually end up watching their marathon. I can't believe that one guy died. I forget his name.

Captain Phil Harris of the Cornelia Marie. One of the best ones on the show. The new episode airs tonight, in about 25 minutes. You can bet where I'll be then.

Last week's episode showed him having the stroke. I read the crew didn't want to show the film but Phil wrote on a piece of paper to continue, even though he couldn't speak.

Tough ole' bird, that one. Makes me realize no matter what happens, it could always get worse. Nothing worse than being trapped in a body, unable to walk, talk, or even eat...like chocolate. :(

I could be persuaded to continue it until the end of the month, which is tomorrow. At least for the print books, in celebration of the lowering of the word count for print books to 25,000 words.

Yeah, Captain Phil. He was one of my favs. I like Sig too!
Thanks for telling me it was tonight. I'll be sure to watch it.

A stroke would be horrible. I know they have a new medicine that, when administered in time, lessons the effects but when your miles out to sea it wouldn't do you much good.

Do you sell very many short stories?
I was asked to do one for an anthology but so far haven't come up with anything. I've never written anything under 65,000 words. It's like it's engrained in me or something.

I want to thank everyone for coming to our June Jubilee event. I hope you all had a great time interacting with the authors and enjoyed a sip of the 'elixir' from Miss Mae's grandpappy. The 35% sale will continue for the print books until tomorrow night. If you didn't get your copy, now it the time.

Until next time we meet again... stay safe, enjoy your family, and make sure to read a good book or two.

Night all.
