View Full Version : Procrastinating

Yep, I'm procrastinating. I need to finish rewriting the ending of a book because it's due to my editor in five days. Ack! But the weather has been too nice and the loops too fun to play on. Grrrr. :huh_oh:I'm sooo bad.
Anyone else have difficulties with procrastination whenever feeling overwhelmed by deadlines? :swoon:

Yes!! So much sometimes I find myself spending more time working out when my next deadline is rather then actually writing. Then of course there's the sudden pile of washing that looks as if it really needs a wash, and the plants that should be re-potted, the cards to make etc.....
In the end I have found that if the words just aren't coming or I'm just not able to concentrate on the writing for more then five seconds I leave it for an hour and go and do something totally different. Then i go back to it spend the first fifteen minutes just re-reading what I've written or making notes before just writing. Sometimes the words just end up being removed but more often then not they work so stay. I've also now got a large wall-chart that has all the days that have main deadlines on them ringed in different colours depending on what kind of deadline they are etc... (yes it was a very good way of filling time - but at least it's something that 'helps' the writing!) which I look at each morning when I wake up to work out what I'm working on.
Of course sometimes non of that works and I have to be tied down on the seat with music loud enough to drown everyone else out and just painfully sit there typing word after word until finally I get into the scene. Or I write it backwards, start with the last word and then work out what lead to that word etc....
I guess it's just a matter of finding out what works for you (oh and I find pulling out the internet cable from the computer sometimes works when all else fails.)
I hope things pick up for you :)
I also hope this all makes sense as I'm writing it at 2.30 in the morning whilst trying to work on a piece of writing that has an almost imediate deadline :mumbles:

I was meaning to write a response yesterday but I thought maybe I should vacuum instead. But then getting the vacuum cleaner out of the closet seemed like a big deal so I.......
Yeah, I am a big time procrastinator. But it's not deadlines that stop me. Deadlines kick in my adrenaline and I seem to thrive on them. In fact, sometimes I wonder if that is part of my procrastinating. I need that rush to get motivated.
I do tend to procrastinate when I've reached a crossroad in my book and I've got to decide which road to take. If I haven't thought it out beforehand (which I'm apt not to do) then a thousand possibilities leap out and can seem overwhelming.

I'm naturally a procrastinator. It doesn't take nice weather or deadlines for me. I just tell myself that it's in my genes, because most of my family is just as bad. I know that's not excuse, but still... ;-)

man, This is good to know I'm not alone!!! I procrastinate until things get down to the wire and then all of a sudden, I pop out of my funk and get crackin' Still, I get sooo frustrated with myself when I think how much time I can waste just doing piddly things. I finally got my desk cleared this weekend and four month's worth of checks balanced. :notworthy: I'm so excited to have that chore behind me. Yeah, Sunday, the funk lifted and I got tons of things done and that felt good.
Deadlines sorta zap me into line but only when they get real close. If the deadline is only a month away, I'm more likely to say: Oh, I have tons of time. No worries. Then the month turns into days and oh wow, panick mode. I must have procrastination in my genes too. :turned:
