The Blue Moon
I consider “Kissing Sin” as one of the hottest books I have ever read. To define “hot” as equivalent to erotic is a tricky business. One remembers Justice Powell’s (of the US Supreme Court) basic definition of pornography “I know it when I see it”. Thus I submit there is not a satisfactory generic understanding of a truly subjective concept.
For me what establishes the “hotness” of “Kissing Sin” is Riley’s attendance at the Blue Moon (nightclub? dance hall? bar?) for the original meet with Misha. She has a jocular byplay with the bouncer/ticket seller where she is wished a good time and Riley assures him with a grin that she fully intends to. Riley enters the premises and sees the patrons engaging in various stages of orgy i.e. dancing (nude of course) copulating and simply watching. To join in Riley descends to the changing rooms- presumably these rooms are segregated. She showers to get rid of the smell of dust; finger combs her hair and puts her belongings to her locker. She has secured around her neck two necessities; key to the locker & a credit card to make purchases- otherwise she is naked to go up to participate in the activities.
When Riley gets to the dance floor she notes that the music is filled with sensual and erotic melodies designed to seduce the senses and the air was as hot as music, rich with the scent of lust and sex. With such atmosphere Riley acknowledges that she loved this place & has always had. BTW the music suggested is left to the imagination of the reader and for me I have a definite obscure example. In the “L Word”, the Showtime TV lesbian drama, there is a scene in the first season episode 4 where Jenny faints when confronting her boyfriend & girlfriend. The music in that scene lasting about a minute is the type I would imagine that would be appropriate to the description in the text. I can list more music as well but this example to my mind is quintessential. Every reader of course is entitled & no doubt invited to conjure up his/her own appropriate example.
Periodically after I had finished reading this novel notwithstanding the enthralling plot, I invariably recall this scene and I can not help but smile as I reminisce this particular episode.
Glad the scene can make you smile and consider it so. Very well put tkutsaar.
I agree with Davidsgirl that was very well put tkutsaar. I think about secens that I like and almost always come back to the Blue Moon scenes. Riley feels her best there because she's around others of her own kind (to an extent anyway) and seems to be the happiest when she's there as well.
As for the music, well, I imagine it being a kind of sensual jazz maybe with an exotic flare. Also, the there is some music in The Chronicles of Narnia that Mr. Tumnus, the Faun played for Lucy that reminds me of the type of music (just the exotic sound, kind of Celtic) that I think that they'd also play in the club. I may be weird on this, but that's just my opinion.
Not weird at all. Yeah your right she does feel happy there in a surrounding she knows and trust.
My favorite scene of Kissing Sin!!!
