One of my stories has been orphaned. It's always difficult when a publisher closes, but this situation is a bit complicated. The story wasn't an ebook where readers could download it and read it, in full, whenever they wanted.
This particular story was an on-going series and the readers had to go to the now defunct website to read it. Once complete, I estimate that the story will be around 100,000 words and I could make it longer if I wanted to. It's also, probably, my most popular story to date.
Now, I'm trying to figure out what to do with it and I'm seeking advice from those who know more about this crazy publishing world than I.
The story has never been published in its entirety so does this mean the next publisher is looking at first or secondary electronic publishing rights? It has been published IN PART which makes me think it would be partial first and partial secondary electronic publishing rights.
Given the strength and length of this story, I think it stands a good chance of getting print published. Would print publishers feel less threatened by a story that has first print publishing rights and partial first/secondary electronic publishing rights?
Has anyone else out there dealt with an orphaned story and can you offer any advice?
I know that Champagne books is taking in orphaned authors. The Wild Rose Press is also taking them...or they were...
I read that on the loops somewhere.
I wish I could help more. But that is all that is sticking in my little bitty brain!HugMe
Thanks for the input. I've been rather busy lately trying to figure out what to do with this story. It was a serial and isn't fully complete yet. So, I'm compiling a target publisher list as well as trying to finish it.
Once the story is done, less that 50% of it will have been seen by readers. They didn't even get to consumation of the relationship. My heart aches for them. I hate seeing readers stuck in limbo like this.
Given the length and the strength of the story, I'm seriously considering sending this one out to agents who handle GLBT erotic romance.
