What's topmost on your TBR pile, book or e-book?

Last night I read the first book in the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. Yeah, yeah, I'm sure everyone has read it already but I never read things that are hyped until the dust has settled!

I'm not really sure what I think of Northern Lights. I enjoyed it from about the middle of the book onwards, but it seemed rather precious to me. There's so much information packed in there - and hats off to Pullman, he does know how to write well - so most of the time I was distracted from the plot by all the subtle inferences, one step removed, from real history, philosophy, religion and science. Perhaps if I were a 'young adult', most of these references would go over my head and I could just concentrate on the story!

However, I did love the idea of Pope John Calvin, and the whole thing with the daemons and the intercision was genuinely brilliant. I'll continue with the series, anyway.

Has anyone else read His Dark Materials? What did you think of it?
