Default June 17th is my June Jubilee Day!

I hope you'll stop by and visit with me.

I'll be talking about my weekly writing series for aspiring authors (on my blog: http://kayespencer.com/blog) and since my writing passion is the historical genre, particularly the American Old West, I'd like to hear what others have to say about this genre - writing and reading.

Everyone who posts in my little corner of the CTR forums on June 17th will be entered into a random drawing for this prize: Garth Brooks' album, The Ultimate Hits. It is an extended album with cd and dvd. I'll explain why I chose this as the prize on June 17th.

So, be there or...well, you know the rhyme.

    GM Kaye,
I hope you have a successful Jubilee day. I love country music so winning a Garth Brooks cd would be cool. I love historical romance and suspense. I actually get to relearn something that I did in school but because of poor memory or recall what I can't remember now. I'll stop in again later. I have to go to the doctors today.

    Have a great day.

    Default Love a western

Hap-happy Jubilee Day I love me a western, not like Louie Lamour or Larry Mcmurtry (sp). I need some romance.

    Default Westerns and romanctic elements

I agree about needing the romance in a western. Louis L'Amour's stories had the romance on the side, which was better than nothing.

Hmmm, I agree about the romance although I do like Louis L'Amour. And some of the old Western writers are actually quite romantic What about Zane Grey's Jane Withersteen and Lassiter in 'Riders Of The Purple Sage' and the unrequited love in Shane by Jack Schaeffer? Not that I don't love the romantic western writers here though, I do!

    Default Come back Shane...

When I think about how much Shane loved Marian and that he was willing to forego his own happiness for the sake of her marriage and to take down the villian for the sake of her family's future, well, he's my kind of tortured hero.

Another movie that has that element is Appaloosa (Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris). The movie wasn't well received in Hollywood-land by the critics (but who gives a care about their whiny opinions) but I was really impressed with it.

I liked that the story was about two guys, partners, who loved each other as men-friends (nothing romantic), just that deep kinship that couldn't be broken, even by Renee Zellweger. When Viggo killed Jeremy Irons so Ed could live HEA with Renee and thereby sacrificing his own chance at a different life with a wife, home, and family just broke my heart for him.

    Kaye,

It is nice to meet you. I will have to check out your work as I will admit to not having read too many books in the cowboys of the Old West romance genre. What inspired you to write in this genre? Would you ever venture out of it?

I hope you are having a wonderful June Jubilee Day!

    Yadkny...

My inspiration for writing westerns is mostly from growing up in a cowboy environment. I fell in love with Marty Robbins and Louis L'Amour at an early age.

To answer your question about writing out of the western genre...yes, I have and will continue to do so. Now, having said that, I'm finishing a western right now that will open the western line at Breathless Press in November. I'm also preparing to submit a 100k+ western historical to another epublisher and I have a western placed with an agent in hopes of acquiring a print deal. HOWEVER, I'm also finishing a Roaring Twenties gangster story and I have a WWII romance and the beginnings of a steampunk in the works.
