I did this mini-interview with Herbert, I love his writing, he never uses the traditional strong language of erotic fiction, but boy, is his stuff hot! If you love you Science Fiction, futuristic and thriller genre's with a bit of difference, Herbert is your man.
Welcome Herb, please tell us a little about yourself
I am a writer. At least I consider myself one, even though some people may not acknowledge that. I’ve always been writing. My first accomplishment was a little comic book ‘Cowboy Jippi’. I think I was about 10 years old at the time. In my teens, I wrote poems and short stories. One of my short stories, a play, was actually bought by a radio station in Germany and was broadcast over the radio in a program for Schools. I also wrote stories for ‘The First audio Science Fiction Magazine’ (in German). That very first audio tape was kept in a museum for Space Exploration in Stuttgart. I hope it is still there. My first completed novel by the title of ‘The Galactics’ was also written in German. I was very proud of it. Then. Now I keep it hidden away from prying eyes.
Besides writing, I also spent my time reading and drawing.
In my other life, I am a retired Electrical Contractor, a husband, a father, and a grandfather. Even though I am retired, I don’t seem to have enough time to write. Too many other things to do. Sometimes, as writers, we forget that there are other people who need our company. Family is very important to me.
I live in Winnipeg, Canada. No, we don’t always have snow here. The summers get pretty hot. Mind you, it would be nice if they were longer.
What is the most satisfying aspect of writing for you Herbert?
The most satisfying aspect for me is the fact I can finally share all the stuff I’ve been writing with others. There are actually people out there who like what I write. I just wish I could get my books out to more people.
Would you call yourself a science fiction junkie and are you a Trekkie
Yes, I have always been a Science Fiction junkie. I’m not a Trekkie, but I am a fan. I’ve seen all the TV shows (Startrek, Voyager, Deep Space 9) and I miss them.
What is coming up next for you?
I’m working on a novel right now under the title ‘Tainted Valor’. It is a contemporary murder mystery/thriller with the war in the Middle East as a background. No explicit erotica. I have to admit, I find it harder to write than Science Fiction or Fantasy. I’m aiming for a longer novel (I’m at 58,000 words as of July 24, 2007). The problem is, so many other ideas keep popping into my head and they scream to be written, but I’m determined to finish this one before I start anything else.
Where does your muse hit you and do you need any specific setting to write in?
I used to write in my van, during my lunch hour, but now, since I’m retired, that environment is gone. Fortunately, I discovered I can write anywhere. For instance, my short story Gin and Tonic I wrote while vacationing in the Dominican Republic, sitting in a lounge by the ocean. What inspiration and beautiful backdrop to a story!
