    Typing Grand Canyon--The Hopi Indians

The Hopi Indians live in northeast Arizona, atop three adjacent mesas. Oraibi, established in 1050 AD, is the oldest continuously inhabited town in the United States. Hopis live in pueblos made of stone and mud, with kivas nearby. Kivas are underground chambers used for religious ceremonies. The center of the floor has a fire pit. A ladder at the south end is used to enter and exit the kiva. At the north end is a small hole in the floor as a reminder of the sipapu, an entrance in Hopi mythology through which the Hopi entered this world from the previous one. The original sipapu is thought to be located near the Grand Canyon.

Corn is the most common food grown by the Hopi, along with squash, beans, pumpkins, and various other fruits. They recognize Kachinas as powerful ancestor spirits that can be called to bring rain. There are over 300 different Kachinas, and they’re often made into dolls for children and tourists.
