Agreed, agreed! I firmly believe there's nothing wrong with things like in-jokes designed for a particular slice of readers. The trick is making them funny to those who "get it" without it detracting from the story for those who don't. That's very important, IMO.

I think have to be careful with overloading the in-jokes. Too many in-jokes eventually intrude into the story and tends to leave a reader, who doesn't get them, wondering what you're talking about.

With humor, and I keep coming across this, less rather than more is often the best choice.
