As Father’s Day approaches, I’ve given some thought to the television and movie dads who’ve made an impression on me. Some are model dads, some have distinct flaws, and one really reminds me of my hubby. The one thing they all have in common is a genuine love for their fictional families. Now, here’s my top thirteen:
1. Clark Griswold (National Lampoon’s Vacation and sequels)….do the writers know my husband? In Christmas Vacation, he served as my darling husband’s role model as a master of exterior illumination. Of course, he’s doing it for his family 🙂
2. Tim Taylor ( Home Improvement)…clumsy and a bit self-absorbed, but always devoted to his family.
3. Dr. Henry Jones, Sr. (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade)…only a dad like Dr. Jones could have inspired his son, Indiana, to take on such adventures.
4. George Banks (Father of the Bride)…whether played by Steve Martin or Spencer Tracy, what girl wouldn’t have wanted him to walk her down the aisle?
5. Cliff Huxtable (The Cosby Show)…the role model of wise parenting…and provider of pudding pops.
6. Howard Cunningham (Happy Days)…Mr. C. was a great dad to his family and a role model to the Fonz…who could ask for more?
7. Steven Keaton (Family Ties)…another role model father.
8. Al Bundy (Married with Children)…Your eyebrows just raised, but Al was a loving, if somewhat unorthodox father who loved his kids and his wife, despite his curmudgeonly attitude.
9. Peter Griffin (Family Guy)…more eyebrows…Peter Griffin is a bit of a dimwit, and he’s definitely self-centered, but he really loves his kids.
10. Archie Bunker (All in the Family)…for all of his faults, Archie was a loving dad to his “little girl”.
11. Mike Brady (The Brady Bunch)…the perfect, permed 70s dad.
12. Bernard “Beanie” Campbell (Old School)…an unusual choice, perhaps, but who can forget Vince Vaughn admonishing his son to use his “earmuffs” when around Beanie’s vulgar friends?
13. Bernie Focker (Meet the Fockers)…Dustin Hoffman’s portrayal of a Gaylord Focker’s Mr. Mom was funny, touching, and best of all, showed that dads can still be sexy husbands even into their senior years.
Hope you’ve enjoyed my look at my favorite tv and movie fathers. Who’s your favorite dad from the silver or small screen?
