Tryggvarin is the lone wolf of the Eagle Clan, traveling the world over, searching for meaning after his wife and son are lost. While trekking through the woods in England, he hears the pitiful cries of a girl child. Offering his assistance, she asks for help in finding her home.

Alice Chappell’s parents offered a meal in exchange for bringing their daughter home. During the repast he learns the true feelings of friendship. When he feels the need of a respite from his never ending quest, he returns to the Chappell’s home.

When Alice is fifteen years old, she falls for a boy and asks Tryggvarin his opinion. Sensing the boy’s immaturity, he tries to warn her of impending heartache, but she is past listening. Leaving with a heavy heart, he reminds her of his unfailing offer of friendship. Would she need him? Would he keep his promise?

L. Shannon has written a heart tugging tale of the power of friendship. Alice offers her unflinching faith in Tryggvarin, despite his true nature, while he offers her a soft place to fall when life turns hard. I was immediately drawn into the story and thought it sweet. The sadness displayed by Tryggvarin will touch the heart of many a reader. The touching conclusion left me wanting more.
